PHYSICS HOMEWORK 30 OCTOBER 2025

3 Mark Questions:
1. Draw a ray diagram for the formation of image of appoint object by a thin double convex
lens having radii of curvature R1 and R2. Hence derive lens maker’s formula.
2. Draw the labelled ray diagram for the formation of image by a compound microscope.
Derive an expression for its total magnification (or magnifying power), when the final image
is formed at the near point.
3. Draw a ray diagram showing refraction of a ray of light through a triangular glass prism.
Hence obtain the relation for the refractive index in terms of angle of prism (A) and angle of
minimum deviation
4. A point source in air is kept 24 cm in front of a concave spherical glass surface (ang=1.5)
and radius of curvature 60 cm. find the nature of the image formed and its distance from
the point source.
2 Mark Questions:
5. A double convex lens is made of a glass of refractive index 1.55, with both faces of the
same radius of curvature. Find the radius of curvature required, if the focal length is 20 cm.
6. A ray of monochromatic light passes through an equilateral glass prism in such a way that
the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of emergence and each of these angles is ¾
times the angle of the prism. Determine the angle of deviation and the refractive index of
the glass prism.
7. what is total internal reflection? Under what conditions does it occur? Find the relation
between critical angle and refractive index and Name one phenomenon which is based on
total internal reflection.
8. A small candle 2.5 cm in size is placed 27 cm in front of a concave mirror of radius of
curvature 36 cm. At what distance from the mirror should a screen be placed in order to
receive a sharp image. Describe the nature and size of the image.
