Problem statement
A study to assess the knowledge regarding family planning method among eligible couple in
selected community, West Bengal
Background of the study
According to WHO India has experienced remarkable growth over the past two decades and
is ranked the highest population in the world.
Previous studies showed that acceptance of children as God,s will , little or
incorrect knowledge information regarding FD methods , false or misleading information are
different factors related to contraceptive use .
Need of the study
India was the first country in the world to formulate the national family planning program in
the year 1952 with the objective of “ reducing the birth rate to the extent necessary to
stabilize the population at a level consistent with the requirement of the requirement of the
national economy ’’
According to the NFHS [2019- 21] , 33.3% in india married women donot use any
contraceptive method and women aged 15 – 24 years have the highest proportion of non uses
[60%]
In west Bengal the contraceptive prevalence rate was 65.3% in 2019 – 20 NFHS
Survey
According to a study conducted by mondal m [2024] showed that 70. 98% women had
average knowledge and 16.67% women had poor knowledge regarding contraceptive
According to who among the 1.9 billion women of reproductive age [15-45 years ]
worldwide in 2021, 1.1 billion have a need for family planning.
A descriptive study conducted by Mrs Yadav S in 2019 in selected area of greater Noida
showed that majority of [65%] respondent had poor knowledge and 3%had good knowledge .
Purpose
To assess the knowledge regarding family planning method among eligible couple.
Objective
To assess existing knowledge regarding family planning method among eligible couple.
To find out the association between the knowledge regarding family planning method among
eligible couple with selected demographic variables
Variables
The variables selected for the study are:
Research variables: Knowledge regarding family planning methods.
Demographic variables: Number of eligible couples, age, Religion, marital status, educational
status, family income, ASHA / Health personal, family members, mass media, Prior
knowledge regarding family planning.
Operational Definition
Knowledge: knowledge is the understanding awareness or familiarity gain through learning,
experience or study. It is the information, facts, skills, truth that a person acquires and uses.
Family planning methods: Family planning methods or techniques or practices used by
individuals or couple to prevent unwanted pregnancy, achieve desire spacing between
children or plan the number and timing of birth.
Eligible couple: An eligible couple is a married couple where the wife is in the reproductive
age group of 15-45 years, this couples are the main target group for family planning services.
Delimitation
The study is delimited to the eligible couples [age group 15-19] years of rural community
west bengal
Research methodology
Research methodology implies the techniques recorded to structure a study rather an analysis
information in an oriented manner. It is indicated general data for study.
It includes research approach, design, setting, sample, sampling technique, development of
tools, content validity and reliability of the tools.
Research approach:
In this study qualitative research approach will be adopted.
Research design:
In this study descriptive research approach will be adopted.
Population
Population means the entire set of individuals of object having some common characteristics,
sometimes refers to eligible couple in a selected community of west Bengal.
Sample
The sample of the study are eligible couple of selected rural community.
Sampling criteria
Inclusion criteria:
Couples who belong under the age 15-45 years
Couples able to understand and respond in Bengali and Hindi language
Exclusion criteria:
Couples who are not willing to participate
Couples who are unavailable during data collection
Sample size and setting of the study
Sample size:
Sample is a subject of population.
The sample size for the pilot study will be 10
The sample size for final study will be 100
Setting of the study:
Pilot study: The setting of pilot study will be Ward 88, Sahanagar Urban community
Final study: The setting for the final study will be __
Sampling technique
In the present study, the sample selection will be done by nonprobability convenience
sampling technique.

Description of tools
Tool - I: Structured interview schedule for collection of demographic variables.
Purpose -
This tool is developed to collect the data related to demographic characteristics of eligible
couple. This tool comprises that 13 items which are -
Age
Gender
Marital status
Highest level of education
Occupation
Number of children
Number of household members
Monthly household income
Previous use of Contraceptive method
Current use of contraceptive methods
Tool-II: Structure interview schedule to assess Knowledge regarding family planning
methods among eligible couple.
Purpose -This tool is designed to assess knowledge regarding family planning methods
among eligible couples There are total 20 questions and each question has 4 alternatives,
written Instruction are given and write answer is marked by an interviewer.
Validity and Reliability of tools
Validation of tools: Tool - It is submitted to experts of Matri Bhavan college of Nursing,
RKSM for validity. The experts are requested to give opinion about relevance, accuracy and
appropriateness of the items of the tools. Tool - II is also submitted to experts for validity, we
have taken the suggestions given by our respected validators and improve the tools as per
there suggestion
Reliability of tools: Reliability is the degree of consistency or dependability with which an
instrument measures an attribute it is design to measure.
Linguistic validation
Linguistic validation of the tools will be done by experts. Necessary editorial correction will
be made and verified by experts in the field of English language.
Ethical Consideration
Ethical permission:
Ethical permission will be taken from ethics committee of Matri Bhavan College of Nursing,
Ramakrishna Sarada Mission
Informed consent will be taken from Medical Officer, UPHC of Ward 88, Sahanagar, South
24 Parganas
Administrative permission:
Administrative permission will be taken from principal, Matri Bhavan college of Nursing,
Ramakrishna Sarada Mission
Permission will be also taken by Guide & co-guide of Matri Bhavan college of Nursing,
