Chapter 1 – Traverser

“Taixuan Sect’s examination is hereby concluded, all of the disciples who have passed the
examination are allowed to follow me back to Taixuan Sect!”

Jing State, at the main gate of Taixuan Sect, the examination elder said indifferently, then
summoned out a huge flying boat into the sky.

A youth looked with somewhat of an envy at the surrounding people who began to board
onto the flying boat.

As the flying boat which the examination elder and the people who had passed the sect
examination were on flew in high speed into the distant sky, the youth couldn’t help but let
out a sigh.

This youth was called Qin Changqing, and not too long ago, during the sect examination, he
was mercilessly eliminated due to his extremely poor aptitude.

“I have thrown the face of traversers…”

A month ago, Qin Changqing traversed over to this world, and to his astonishment, he
discovered that this world was actually a cultivation world, a world which he had heard so
much about in his previous world.

Right at the time that he traversed over to this world, he found out that one of Jing State’s ten
big cultivation sects, Taixuan Sect, was intending on recruiting disciples, and thus, he
immediately began to head to Taixuan Sect.

Originally, in his mind, he was thinking that since he was a traverser, it was only natural that
he was going to be a prodigy that has been blessed by the heaven, so wouldn’t something like
passing a sect examination be just like a piece of cake to him?

However, to his dismay, although he did indeed possess the aptitude to be able to cultivate,
the spiritual root that he possessed was merely a lower quality spiritual root, and with a lower
quality spiritual root, he was completely unable to reach the bare requirement of being
accepted into Taixuan Sect as a disciple.

“The requirement of Taixuan Sect’s recruitment is too high for me, to join Taixuan Sect as a
disciple, one has to at least possess a middle quality spiritual root. How about we go and join
a cultivation family instead?”

“If we joined a cultivation family, our freedom won’t be ours anymore. In the end, when all is
said and done, we are basically joining into their family as married-in son-in-laws and our job
is to just help them give birth to children, this is basically humiliation!”

“As long as we are able to cultivate, this bit of humiliation is nothing! You have to think of
this from another angle, all we have to do is to help them give birth to children and nothing
else, it’s not like we are losing anything much, and the treatment that those cultivation
families are offering to us isn’t too bad, not only would they provide us with cultivation
resources, but they would also provide us with cultivation techniques. If we just endure
through it and work hard, it is a possibility that we may be able to make it in this cultivation
world…”

The people who failed the sect examination were discussing amongst themselves, and one of
the conversations between two people piqued Qin Changqinq’s interest.

Cultivation family? Married-in son-in-law?

Qin Changqing’s eyes slowly lighted up.

No matter what, it was a fact that he at least possessed a spiritual root, although it was a
lower quality spiritual root.

Therefore, he was definitely not going to be willing to just live on as a mortal, as long as
there was an opportunity that was open for him, he would definitely seize it.

Just like other people in this world, he also wants to be able to cultivate and live a long life!

Join a cultivation family as a married-in son-in-law? So be it!

In any case, it is not like this is a bad thing for me.

At the least, I will be able to marry lots of wives without having to prepare any betrothal
gifts, isn’t this simply like a free gift that has fallen onto me from the heaven?

Who would have thought, my wish of having a wife, a wish that I wasn’t able to fulfil in my
previous world, I am going to be able to fulfil it in this world!

Immediately, Qin Changqing made his decision, and he began walking towards the place
where a bunch of cultivation families were currently at.

Common questions

Initially, Qin Changqing's worldview as a traverser is idealistic, assuming innate prodigy status due to narratives from his previous world. This leads to overconfidence in his prospects at the Taixuan Sect. However, his failure forces a reassessment, and his decisions shift towards pragmatism. He becomes open to alternatives like joining a cultivation family, acknowledging the necessity of compromise to achieve his cultivation and lifestyle ambitions, reflecting a maturation in his worldview from idealistic to practical realism .

Spiritual root quality directly impacts social status, determining access to prestige sects like Taixuan. Lower quality roots limit entry into elite paths, forcing individuals like Qin Changqing into alternative routes such as joining cultivation families. This hierarchy creates a social stratification based on innate attributes, influencing individual choices and reinforcing systems where those with higher spiritual roots retain privileged access to resources and opportunities. Thus, spiritual roots perpetuate systemic inequities while shaping personal goals and survival strategies within the cultivation framework .

In the cultivation world, merit is redefined; it is not merely about innate ability but also the ability to navigate and exploit social structures, like cultivation families, to one's advantage. Qin Changqing's journey exemplifies this as his low innate spiritual aptitude challenges traditional notions of being naturally gifted as a prerequisite for success. Instead, adaptability and strategic decision-making become crucial, suggesting destiny is shaped by more than innate merit; it involves leveraging available systems and relationships to achieve transcendence and success .

The author uses Qin Changqing's internal dialogue to juxtapose his disillusionment with innate talent post-examination with a newfound resolve to adapt his strategies. This shift from boasting about his status as a traverser to accepting pragmatic solutions like marrying into a cultivation family portrays the psychological toll of unmet expectations. It also highlights his resilience and drive to fulfill personal dreams, illustrating the complex interplay between self-perception, failure, and the relentless pursuit of aspirations in an unpredictable world .

Joining a cultivation family offers significant personal benefits, such as access to resources and techniques needed for cultivation, which otherwise might be unattainable. It also allows individuals like Qin Changqing to achieve personal desires and avoid living as a mortal. However, drawbacks include a loss of personal freedom, as one becomes bound by family obligations, potentially reducing one's individual agency and perpetuating a societal structure that undervalues non-cultivation aspirants' autonomy by relegating them to these roles .

Qin Changqing illustrates perseverance through his willingness to pursue any available avenue to realize his cultivation potential despite failing the Taixuan Sect examination. His compromise to become a married-in son-in-law signifies his adaptability, embracing what appears to be a setback as an opportunity to achieve broader goals. This reflects a broader theme where flexibility and the ability to seize unexpected opportunities are crucial to overcoming initial failures and achieving personal aspirations in the cultivation world .

Qin Changqing faced the challenge of possessing only a lower quality spiritual root, which was insufficient to meet the Taixuan Sect's requirement of at least a middle quality spiritual root for discipleship. As a traverser, he initially believed he would naturally be a prodigy, expecting the examination to be easy due to his previous world's narratives about cultivation prodigies. This preconception led to his dismay when he was mercilessly eliminated due to his poor aptitude .

Qin Changqing's decision to join a cultivation family addresses existential motivations like the desire for a meaningful life and longevity, transcending immediate material gain. His willingness to endure possible humiliation reflects a deeper drive to transcend mortality and achieve cultivation, thus aligning with broader existential pursuits for significance and fulfillment within the world. By choosing a path that offers spiritual progression over autonomy, Qin's actions echo a universal quest for purpose and personal evolution .

Qin Changqing's attitude is more opportunistic and determined compared to other examination failures who consider joining cultivation families but view it as humbling. While others focus on the loss of autonomy, Qin is pragmatic and sees it as an opportunity to achieve cultivation, reflecting his adaptability and willingness to compromise for greater goals such as longevity and fulfilling unachieved dreams from his past life .

The concept of "married-in son-in-law" suggests a societal structure where cultivation families seek to enhance their lineage by marrying in individuals with cultivation potential. This practice highlights a transactional approach to marriage, where personal autonomy may be compromised for cultivation resources. For Qin Changqing, this arrangement appeals as it offers him a realistic path to cultivation, a status upgrade, and personal benefits, such as multiple marriages without the financial burden, thus fulfilling his unachieved desires from his previous world .
