Overview of Earth's Geography and Features

The document outlines the discipline of geography, which encompasses physical, human, and regional aspects, and discusses the Earth's origin, structure, and processes. It details the distribution of oceans and continents, types of rocks and minerals, geomorphic processes, atmospheric layers, weather and climate, the water cycle, and soil formation. Additionally, it provides a brief overview of India's physical environment, including its location, physiographic divisions, rivers, climate, vegetation, and soil types.

‭Geography –‬

‭1. Geography as a Discipline‬

‭Geography = study of Earth and human interaction with it.‬

‭3 parts:‬

‭Physical Geography – land, water, air, climate.‬

‭Human Geography – people, population, culture, economy.‬

‭Regional Geography – study of areas/regions.‬

‭Useful for planning, development, disaster management.‬

‭2. Origin & Evolution of the Earth‬

‭Universe began with Big Bang (13.7 billion years ago).‬

‭Solar system formed from a gas cloud (Nebular theory).‬

‭Earth formed ~4.6 billion years ago.‬

‭Early earth: hot → cooled → atmosphere & oceans formed → life began.‬

‭3. Interior of the Earth‬

‭Layers:‬

‭Crust (outer, thin, rocks – granite, basalt).‬

‭Mantle (middle, thick, semi-molten).‬

‭Core (inner, nickel + iron, very hot).‬

‭Info from earthquake waves (seismic waves).‬

‭4. Distribution of Oceans & Continents‬

‭Wegener’s Drift Theory – continents once joined as Pangaea, later drifted.‬

‭Plate Tectonics – earth’s crust has plates that move.‬

‭3 plate boundaries:‬

‭Divergent (move apart),‬

‭Convergent (collide),‬

‭Transform (slide past).‬

‭5. Minerals & Rocks‬

‭Minerals = naturally found substances (gold, mica, coal).‬

‭Rocks = made of minerals.‬

‭Igneous – from lava/magma (granite).‬

‭Sedimentary – from layers of deposits (sandstone).‬

‭Metamorphic – changed by heat/pressure (marble).‬

‭Rock cycle shows changes from one type to another.‬

‭6. Geomorphic Processes‬

‭Endogenic forces – inside earth (volcanoes, earthquakes).‬

‭Exogenic forces – outside earth (weathering, erosion).‬

‭Agents of erosion: rivers, glaciers, wind, waves.‬

‭Landforms created: valleys, dunes, beaches, U-shaped valleys.‬

‭7. Atmosphere‬

‭Layers: Troposphere → Stratosphere → Mesosphere → Thermosphere → Exosphere.‬

‭Composition: Nitrogen 78%, Oxygen 21%, other gases 1%.‬

‭Protects us from harmful rays & maintains temperature.‬

‭8. Weather & Climate‬

‭Weather – daily condition of air.‬

‭Climate – average weather over long time.‬

‭Heat transfer: radiation, conduction, convection.‬

‭Winds: trade winds, monsoon, cyclones.‬

‭9. Water (Hydrosphere)‬

‭Water cycle: evaporation → condensation → rainfall → rivers/oceans.‬

‭Ocean currents:‬

‭ arm (Gulf Stream),‬

W
‭Cold (Labrador).‬
‭Tides – rise & fall of sea level due to Moon & Sun.‬
‭10. Soils‬

‭Made by weathering of rocks + organic matter.‬

‭Layers (profile): O (organic), A (topsoil), B (subsoil), C (parent rock).‬

‭Types in India: Alluvial, Black, Red, Laterite, Desert, Mountain.‬

‭Soil conservation is important to stop erosion.‬

‭India: Physical Environment (Very Short Notes)‬

‭Location – India in Northern Hemisphere, between 8°N–37°N.‬

‭Physiographic Divisions – Himalayas, Plains, Plateau, Coastal plains, Islands.‬

‭Rivers –‬

‭Himalayan (Ganga, Indus, Brahmaputra – perennial).‬

‭Peninsular (Godavari, Krishna, Narmada – seasonal).‬

‭Climate – Monsoon is main feature. 4 seasons: winter, summer, rainy, retreating monsoon.‬

‭Vegetation – evergreen, deciduous, thorny, montane, tidal.‬

‭Soils – Alluvial, Black, Red, Laterite, Desert, Mountain.‬
