THE MICROSCOPE

A microscope’s parts are grouped


A. Magnifying (eyepiece, objective lenses)
B. Illuminating (light source, diaphragm, condenser)
C. Mechanical (arm, base, stage, focus knobs) components.

 These parts work together to enlarge and focus images of tiny specimens by adjusting light and
magnification through the lenses for clear viewing.
 Key functions include the eyepiece for viewing, objective lenses for primary magnification (e.g., 4x, 10x,
40x, 100x), the stage for holding slides with clips, a light source to illuminate the sample, and coarse/fine
focus knobs to enlarge and sharpen the image.

Parts and Functions

1. Light Source (substage light)


• found in the base of the microscope (which bears the weight of the microscope).
• activated by turning on the light switch at the back of the microscope.
• The intensity of the light is adjusted by turning the light control knob.
