CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Paediatric patients present unique challenges in medication management due to their

developing physiological systems, varying ages, and weights, which necessitate precise dosing
and administration methods. Ensuring medication adherence in children is critical for achieving
optimal therapeutic outcomes and minimizing the risk of adverse effects. One key factor
influencing adherence is the design and functionality of pharmaceutical packaging. Traditional
packaging often falls short in meeting the specific needs of pediatric patients, leading to
potential dosing errors, non-adherence, and safety risks. Paediatric dosages are often weight-
based and require precise calculations, increasing the risk of errors. Children may resist taking
medications due to unpleasant tastes, textures, or forms. Liquid formulations can be
challenging to measure accurately, and solid dosage forms may be hard for children to swallow.

Packaging that is simple and intuitive can reduce caregiver burden and minimize dosing
errors. Child-resistant packaging can prevent accidental ingestions and enhance safety.
Packaging that incorporates reminders or tracking features can support adherence to
medication regimens. Recent advancements in pharmaceutical packaging technology have led
to the development of innovative solutions tailored to pediatric needs. These include unit-dose
packaging, smart packaging with digital reminders, and child-friendly designs that enhance
usability and safety. There is a pressing need for further research and development in pediatric
pharmaceutical packaging to address the unique challenges faced by children and their
caregivers. By focusing on user-centered design and incorporating feedback from patients,
caregivers, and healthcare providers, the pharmaceutical industry can develop packaging
solutions that improve medication adherence and outcomes in pediatric populations.
