INTRAVENOUS INJECTION

Materials Needed

Medication to be administered without air, 1 needle (22/24g)


long and medium thickness,
syringe, liquid disinfectant, cotton wool, adhesive tape,
tourniquet.

Technique

1. Wash your hands.


2. Reassure the patient and explain the procedure.

3. Use a comfortable position.


4. Apply tourniquet and look for a suitable vein.

5. Ask the patient to swell.


6. Disinfect the area to be injected.

7. Stretch the skin taut in the longitudinal direction of the vein


to be used.
8. Insert needle at an angle (around 30°), bevel up.
9. Puncture the skin and place the needle slightly into the vein
(1.5-3mm).

10. Aspirate slightly.

11. If blood appears in the syringe does so you are in the


vein. If it does not pull out, try again.
12. Release the tourniquet.

[Link] the medication slowly.


14. Place a dry pad or block for the pain/swelling/haematoma
at the site of the vein onto the opening.

15. Withdraw the needle swiftly. Press sterile cotton wool onto
the opening to secure you are still in
the correct place.

16. Check the patient's reaction and offer additional


reassurance if necessary.

17. Clean up, dispose of waste safely, wash your hands.

SUBCUTANEOUS INJECTION
Materials Needed

Medication to be administered (Norculin), 1 needle (Gauge


25, short and thin on syringe), liquid
disinfectant, cotton wool, adhesive tape.

Technique

1. Wash hands.

2. Reassure the patient and explain the procedure.


3. Use a comfortable position.

4. Disinfect the area to be injected (Upper arm, Upper leg,


Abdomen).
5. Pinch fold of the skin.
6. Insert needle into the base of the skin—hold at an angle of
25-30 degrees.
7. Aspirate slightly (0.5mm).

8. Inject slowly (10-20 seconds).

9. Withdraw needle quickly.

10. Press sterile cotton wool onto the opening, fix with
adhesive tape.
11. Check the patient’s reaction and give additional
reassurance if necessary.

12. Clean up, dispose of waste safely, wash hands.
