and spent 11.855 billion pounds in total. In the following years, visitors numbers
increased to 32.778 million in 2007 before falling back to 31.880 million by the
end of the period. Similarly, total expenditure by tourists steadily rose throughout
the years, ending up at 16.323 billion pounds in 2008.
Regarding the remaining metrics, the typical visitor to the UK spent 8.2 nights
there whilre spending 475 pounds at the start of the period. Thereafter, the average
spend per visit decreased to 466 pounds in 2004, before recovering and continuing
to rise to 511 pounds in 2008. By contrast, the average length of stay of visitors
followed the opposite trend, as after it went up to 8.4 nights in 2006, the fingures
declined to 7.7 nights at the end of the time frame.
