ACTIVITY
Direction: Create a powerful slogan that will awaken every individual to take
action in protecting nature and preventing the destruction caused by floods.
ANALYSIS
1. If you will be given a chance to prevent floods, what will you do? Do you
think your solution/idea will prevent flood? Why?
First, I’d prioritize reforestation and afforestation efforts in critical watersheds
and flood-prone areas. Planting more trees and restoring natural vegetation can help
absorb excess rainwater, reduce soil erosion, and slow down runoff.
Next, I’d invest in sustainable urban planning and infrastructure, like green
roofs, permeable pavements, and flood-resistant buildings. This would help reduce the
burden on drainage systems and minimize the risk of flooding.
I’d also implement community-based flood management programs, educating
people on flood risks, evacuation procedures, and emergency response plans.
Empowering communities to take ownership of flood prevention and mitigation can
make a huge difference.
My solution might not completely eliminate floods, but it could significantly
reduce the risk and impact. By combining these approaches, we can create more
resilient communities and

1. What is flooding?
Is the abnormal rise of water level in rivers, coastal areas, plains, and in
highly urbanized centers which may be a result of natural phenomena, human
activities, or both.

2. Identify the three common types of floods. Discuss each.
1. Fluvial floods (river floods)
Occurs when the water level in a river, lake or stream rises and
overflows onto the surrounding banks, shores and neighboring land.
The water level rise could be due to excessive rain or snowmelt.
2. Pluvial floods (flash floods and surface water)
Surface water floods occur when an urban drainage system is
overwhelmed and water flows out into streets and nearby structures.
A pluvial flood occurs when an extreme rainfall event creates a flood
independent of an overflowing water body.
Flash floods are characterized by an intense, high velocity torrent of
water triggered by torrential rain falling within a short amount of time
within the vicinity or on nearby elevated terrain.
3. Coastal flood (storm surge)
Coastal flooding is the inundation of land areas along the coast by
seawater. Common causes of coastal flooding are intense windstorm
events occurring at the same time as high tide (storm surge), and
tsunamis.
Storm surge is created when high winds from a windstorm force
water onshore this is the leading cause of coastal flooding and often
the greatest threat associated with a windstorm. The effects increase
depending on the tide – windstorms that occur during high tide result
in devastating storm surge floods.

APPLICATION
1. Differentiate the three common types of floods.
Heavy rainfall is the simplest cause of flooding. When there is too much rain or
it happens too fast, there just isn’t a place for it to go. This can result in floods like
flash flooding.
Overflowing rivers are another cause of floods. You don’t necessarily need
heavy rains though to experience river flooding. As we mentioned before, river
flooding can happen when there is debris in the river or dams that block the flow of
the water.
Broken dams are another cause of flooding. Older infrastructure can fail when
heavy rains come and water levels rise. When dams break, they unleash torrents of
water on unsuspecting households.
Storm surge and tsunamis also cause flooding. Storm surges from hurricanes
and other tropical systems can cause sea levels to rise and cover normally dry coastal
areas in several feet of water. Tsunamis on the other hand are giant waves caused by
earthquakes or underwater volcanic eruptions. As these waves move inland, they build
height and can push a lot of water inland in coastal areas.
Steep banks are also to blame for flooding. Flooding often occurs when there
is fast runoff into lakes, rivers, and other basins. This is often the case with rivers and
other channels that feature steep sides.
Lack of vegetation can cause flooding. Vegetation can help slow runoff and
prevent flooding. When there is a lack of vegetation, there is little to stop water from
running off and overflowing river banks and streams.
Melting snow and ice is another common reason for flooding. When a large
amount of snow and/or ice melts quickly, it often doesn’t have somewhere to go except
low-lying
