INFORMATION SHEET 1.1 — SET UP COMPUTER NETWORKS

1. Introduction
Setting up computer networks is essential for ensuring communication, resource sharing,
data transfer, and internet connectivity. Proper network configuration results in reliable
and secure operations.

2. Learning Objectives
- Identify network devices and their functions.

- Construct network cables following standards.

- Configure IP addressing.

- Build and test a LAN.

- Apply troubleshooting procedures.

3. Network Devices
- Router – Directs data between networks.

- Switch – Connects devices in a LAN.

- Access Point – Provides wireless connectivity.

- NIC – Enables devices to join a network.

- Modem – Converts ISP signal.

- Cables – UTP, Fiber.

4. Cabling Standards
Two standards:

• TIA/EIA-568A

• TIA/EIA-568B

Straight-through cables: different devices.

Crossover cables: similar devices.

5. IP Addressing
- IP Address

- Subnet Mask

- Default Gateway

- DNS Servers

These define how devices communicate.

6. Setting Up Networks
Steps:

1. Prepare tools and materials.

2. Create UTP cables.

3. Connect PCs, switch, router.

4. Configure IPv4.

5. Test using PING.

7. Safety Precautions
- Follow ESD procedures.

- Avoid cable bending.

- Keep devices dry.

- Power off before connecting cables.

SELF-CHECK 1.1
1. Define a router.

2. What wiring standard is commonly used?

3. What tool is used for crimping?

4. Purpose of a switch?

5. What command tests connectivity?

ANSWER KEY — SELF-CHECK 1.1

1. A router directs data between networks.

2. TIA/EIA-568B.

3. Crimping tool.

4. A switch interconnects devices within a LAN.

5. The PING command.

TASK SHEET 1.1 — CREATE STRAIGHT-THROUGH CABLE
Objective: To prepare and crimp a UTP cable using 568B standard.

Materials:
- UTP Cable
- RJ-45 connectors
- Crimping Tool
- LAN Tester

Procedure
1. Strip cable jacket.

2. Arrange wires following 568B.

3. Insert wires into RJ-45.

4. Crimp firmly.

5. Test using LAN tester.

JOB SHEET 1.1 — CONFIGURE IP ADDRESS
Objective: Configure static IPv4 settings on a workstation.

1. Open Control Panel → Network Settings.

2. Go to IPv4 properties.

3. Enter IP, subnet mask, gateway.

4. Set DNS servers.

5. Test connectivity.
ACTIVITY SHEET 1.1 — BUILD A SMALL LAN
Activity Description: Learners will assemble a LAN consisting of 3 PCs, a switch, and a
router.

1. Install router and switch.

2. Connect all PCs using straight-through cables.

3. Configure network settings.

4. Test file sharing and ping results.
