15.4 Module Content
Analogue control: Theory; Concept of time lags, open and closed loop transfer functions, block
diagrams. Application of Laplace transforms to typical engineering systems, to the derivation of
transfer functions and hence book diagrams, First order and second order systems, stability criteria,
Nyquist diagrams, Steady state conditions, steady state error. Response of closed systems to step
input. Standard second-order equation C/R = K/5 + 2sw + wn. Use of standard second–order curves
to determine from the transfer function, the step–response of a system, the natural frequency, and
the damping factor. Simple second-order systems represented on an analogue computer (Basic
treatment only, no scaling). Improvement of response by derivation feedback, three-term control
(Discussion only). M and N circles, design of compensation networks using the Bode diagram and
Nicholls chart. Practical systems for analogue control: Temperature control, position control,
speed control, voltage control, process control. Equations of the practical elements of the systems
and derivation of the open and closed loop transfer functions from the block diagrams.
Transducers: Devices to give electrical output from temperature, position, and speed. Description
and characteristics only. Digital control: Theory; Design principles of hardwired digital systems,
in particular the use of NAND and NOR gates, for both AND and OR functions. Practical Systems
for digital control: Interlock systems, Sequence control of processes using (a) time delay units,
(b) counters and decoders, Simple automatic go/no-go testing systems, Digital computer and
controller, application of hardwired logic, Microprocessor and minicomputer. Amplifier systems;
DC amplifiers and their problems, carrier problems, carrier amplifier systems, phase sensitive
rectifiers.
