Prospero reminds Ariel of its fate under Sycorax and issues more orders
before calling Caliban.
Ariel descends on the feast in the guise of a harpy and commands the
courtiers to repent their sins.
Watching over them, Antonio suggests to Alonso’s brother, Sebastian, that he
could kill the sleeping king and assume the throne.
In a raging tempest, mariners fight to save their ship, hindered by interfering
courtiers.
The rightful duke and his infant daughter were cast adrift in a ramshackle
vessel; providence guided them to the island and now it has brought their
usurpers there.
The drunkards plot with Caliban to overthrow Prospero, but Ariel is on hand
to play tricks on them.
Prospero reveals himself to the courtiers; Alonso begs forgiveness and grieves
his lost son.
Watching from ashore, Miranda begs her father to calm the storm and is
assured no-one has been harmed.
The spirits also conjure a feast before Alonso, Antonio, Sebastian and Gonzalo.
Caliban is rebuked and Ariel is freed. Prospero pledges a happy voyage to
Naples and avers that that is the end of his magic powers.
Ferdinand, Prince of Naples, is led by Ariel’s magic to Miranda; the two
youngsters are love-struck.
Prospero reveals to his daughter how he was usurped as Duke of Milan by his
scheming brother Antonio, abetted by Alonso, the King of Naples.

Prospero intimates that he too has lost a daughter before unveiling Ferdinand
and Miranda.
Prospero gives Ferdinand and Miranda his blessing and Ariel is told to bring
the others forth.
Caliban and Prospero curse one another; Caliban is accused of having
attempted to rape Miranda.
Caliban encounters the drunk butler Stephano, whom he mistakes for a god,
and jester Trinculo.
The magical sprite Ariel reports how it has carried out Prospero’s commands
in directing the ship’s passengers and dares to ask for its freedom.
Ariel reports the sorry state of the approaching party and Prospero resolves
to show compassion.
Elsewhere, Ariel’s music sends Alonso and his advisor Gonzalo to sleep.
Prospero’s harsh treatment of Ferdinand is designed to test the feelings of he
and Miranda.
