Transformer – Physics Project (Class 12)
This project explains the construction, working, principles, types, equations, applications, efficiency,
and diagrams related to transformers for CBSE Class 12 Physics.
Introduction
A transformer is a static electrical device used to transfer electrical energy between two circuits
through electromagnetic induction. It works on the principle of mutual induction and is widely used
in power transmission and distribution.
Principle of a Transformer
Transformers operate on Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. When AC flows in the primary
coil, it produces a varying magnetic flux that links to the secondary coil, inducing an EMF.
Construction of a Transformer
A basic transformer consists of:
- Laminated soft iron core
- Primary coil
- Secondary coil
- Insulation and winding
- Tank, bushings, cooling system (for large transformers)
Types of Transformers
Transformers can be classified as:
- Step-up Transformer
- Step-down Transformer
- Isolation Transformer
- Auto-transformer
- Power Transformer
- Distribution Transformer
Transformer EMF Equation
The EMF induced in a transformer coil is given by:
E = 4.44 × f × N × Φm
Where:
E = RMS induced EMF
f = frequency of AC supply
N = number of turns
Φm = maximum magnetic flux
Turns Ratio
The ratio of the turns in the primary to the secondary winding is:
Turns Ratio (n) = N■ / N■
Voltage ratio:
V■ / V■ = N■ / N■
Power and Efficiency
Ideally, transformers are highly efficient (>95%).
Input Power = Output Power (Ideal transformer)
V■ I■ = V■ I■
Efficiency η = (Output power / Input power) × 100%
Losses in Transformers
Main transformer losses:
- Copper Loss (I²R loss)
- Iron Loss (Hysteresis + Eddy Current loss)
- Flux Leakage
- Dielectric Loss
- Stray Losses
Applications of Transformers
Transformers are used in:
- Power transmission
- Voltage regulation
- Electric appliances
- Welding machines
- Audio systems
- Communication devices
Ideal vs Real Transformer
An ideal transformer has no losses, perfect coupling, and 100% efficiency. Real transformers have
losses and less than 100% efficiency.

Conclusion
Transformers are essential components of modern electrical systems. Their ability to efficiently
transfer power across different voltage levels has made long■distance power transmission
possible. Understanding their construction, operation, and equations is crucial for Class 12 Physics.
