Industrial Visit to India Meteorological Department (IMD)

Centre, Begumpet, Hyderabad
On 15/10/2025 (wedsday)

Introduction:

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), Shreyas

Institute of Engineering and Technology, organized an industrial visit to the India
Meteorological Department (IMD) Centre, Begumpet, Hyderabad, on 15th October 2025. The
visit aimed to provide students with practical exposure to the functioning and technologies
used in meteorological data collection, weather forecasting, and communication systems.

Objectives of the Visit :

 To understand the working of various meteorological instruments and sensors.
 To gain knowledge about data acquisition, processing, and transmission in weather
forecasting systems.
 To observe how satellite data and radar systems are utilized in real-time weather
monitoring.
 To bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and their practical applications in the
field of electronics and communication.

About the Organization:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), established in 1875, is the national
agency responsible for meteorological
observations, weather forecasting, and
seismology in India. The Hyderabad IMD
Centre plays a crucial role in monitoring
regional weather conditions, issuing
forecasts, and supporting aviation and
disaster management operations.

Activities During the Visit:

 Surface Observatory: Demonstration of instruments such as barometers, thermometers,
anemometers, and rain gauges used for measuring atmospheric parameters.
 Upper Air Observatory: Explanation of balloon-borne radiosonde systems for upper-air
data collection.
 Radar Section: Observation of Doppler Weather Radar operations and its role in
predicting rainfall and
tracking cyclones.
 Satellite Data Reception Unit:
Understanding how images
are received and processed
for real-time weather analysis.
 Forecasting Division: Insight
into data interpretation,
model-based forecasting, and dissemination of weather information to various sectors.

Learning Outcomes:
 Practical understanding of meteorological sensors and data processing systems.
 Awareness of advanced technologies
used in weather forecasting.
 Knowledge of how electronics,
communication, and data analytics
integrate in real-world meteorological
operations.
 Inspiration to explore career and
research opportunities in atmospheric science and communication technology.

Feedback from Students:

Students expressed that the visit was highly informative and provided valuable
insights into real-time applications of electronic and communication systems. They
appreciated the staff of IMD for their detailed explanations and demonstrations.

Conclusion:
The industrial visit to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Centre, Begumpet,
was a highly enriching experience for both students and faculty members. It effectively
connected classroom learning with practical exposure, enhancing students’ technical
understanding and curiosity about weather monitoring and communication systems.
