Structural Analysis of Floor Openings

The document describes the design of an opening in a floor slab, with the addition of beams around the opening to absorb the stresses. The stresses on the transverse and parallel beams to the opening are calculated and verified.

EXAMPLE OF PROJECT

Holes in the sun

FLOOR FORMOMETRY PROJECT
The openings in the floors (and also in the beams) are necessary for a variety of reasons.
Although they represent a disruptive element for the structure, they do not have
always have such relevance that they require reinforcements or special interventions. The holes
that require structural interventions are those of large dimensions that
they intercept one or more floor joists and are generally used for passage
of elevators and lifts, sometimes causing variations in the scheme
structure of the building.
SLOPE FLOOR PROJECT
There are no changes to the structural scheme, as in the project in question,
when the hole is made by arranging four around it
beams with a base thickness of B=40 ÷ 50 cm in order to form a horizontal frame
suitable for absorbing all the stresses that the removed area of the floor used to absorb
along its outline.

The hypothesis made is to consider that the characteristics of the solicitation

corresponding to the original floor scheme are still valid for the
floor area that contains the hole, and therefore it is used for the calculation the
envelope diagram of the moments and the shear forces already determined.

Beam sizing
Two types of beams are considered: t and p beams (transversely to the alignment)
(parallel). The dimensions of the edge beams are assigned for the hole (b=50) that
will be verified later. The loads we are going to consider are
which derive from the envelope diagrams. In particular, the shear becomes
vertical load q for t and torque moment T for t.
PROJECT EXAMPLE
Let us consider a simplified static scheme of the area of
attic affected by the hole with the stresses
relative to the floor itself.

The vertical load q is the value of the shear calculated at the corresponding point.
of the beam axis t,T is the bending moment calculated in the
