LESSON 11: JESUS RESISTS TEMPTATION

I. Lesson Overview
As human beings, we are gifted with freedom and conscience that enable us to make choices. Every
deliberate act we perform can be evaluated as morally good or evil. This lesson will help us understand the
moral responsibility that comes with freedom and how Jesus serves as our model in resisting temptation.
II. Lesson Objectives
At the end of this lesson, learners will be able to:
 Explain the difference between good acts and evil acts according to the Catechism of the Catholic
Church.
 Reflect on Jesus’ temptations in the desert and how these relate to the moral challenges we face today.
 Apply practical ways to resist temptation and choose what is morally good.

Day 1: ASYNCHRONOUS

“Invitation to live the values in the Message” (page 115- 116)
C. Read the Bible verse below.
THE TEMPTATION OF JESUS – MATTHEW 4:1-11 (page 117-118)

IV. Lesson Content

A. Good Acts and Evil Acts

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 1749, 1755–1756):
 Freedom makes man responsible for his actions.
 Human acts are those that are freely chosen with full knowledge and consent.
 These acts can be morally evaluated — they are either good or evil.
For an act to be morally good, all three elements must be good:
1. Object – what we choose to do (the act itself)
2. Intention – why we do it (our purpose or motive)
3. Circumstances – the situation surrounding the act
If any of these is evil, the whole act becomes morally wrong.
For example:
 Good Object but Evil Intention: Praying to be praised by others is not truly good.
 Evil Object: Acts like murder, adultery, blasphemy, and perjury are always wrong, no matter the
reason or situation.
Moral Principle: We can never do evil so that good may result from it.

B. Freedom and Responsibility

Freedom is a gift from God that allows us to choose and act.
 True freedom is not about doing anything we want but choosing what is good and right.
 Our freedom calls us to live according to God’s will.
 When we choose good, we become more like God, who created us in His image and likeness (imago
Dei).
Being “imago Dei” means we have:
 Intellect – to know what is good.
 Free will – to choose to do good.
Therefore, we are accountable for our choices and must use our freedom responsibly.

C. The Temptation of Jesus

Temptation is the desire to do something wrong or unwise. It tests our freedom and loyalty to God.
Jesus Himself was tempted after forty days of fasting in the desert (Matthew 4:1–11; Luke 4:1–13).
Satan tempted Him in three ways:

God.

Despite His hunger and weakness, Jesus resisted each temptation by:
 Trusting in His Father’s will, and
 Responding with Scripture (the Word of God).
His victory over temptation shows that true freedom is found in obedience to God.

Day 2: ASYNCHRONOUS

ACTIVITY 1.
B. Answer the following questions in CLVE book:

Day 3 AND 4 : ASYNCHRONOUS

LESSON 12: JESUS CALLS US TO CHOOSE THE GOOD

I. Lesson Overview

Every human being is capable of choosing between good and evil, guided by the gift of freedom and
the light of conscience. However, freedom is not the license to do whatever we want; it is the ability to do what
is right and good. This lesson helps learners understand how to judge the morality of human acts, the meaning
of sin, and how to avoid the path of evil by following the example of Jesus Christ, who always chose the
Father’s will.

II. Lesson Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the learners will be able to:
 Explain what makes a human act morally good or evil according to the CCC.
 Recognize the importance of following God’s will as shown by Jesus.
 Reflect on ways to avoid sin and live a life of goodness in daily actions.
Pre-Test/Motivational Activity

III. Lesson: DISCERN THE MESSAGE

A. Read “A Good Choice” (pages 128-129 of your CL Book)

B. Answer the following questions:
“Invitation to live the values in the Message” (page 129- 130)
C. Read the Bible verse below.
A Woman Caught in Adultery – JOHN 8:1-11(page 130-131)

IV. Lesson Content

A. What Makes an Act Good or Evil? (CCC 1755–1756)

A morally good act requires the goodness of three elements:
1. The object – what we choose to do (the act itself).
2. The end or intention – why we do it (our purpose).
3. The circumstances – the situation surrounding the act.
All three must be good for the act to be morally good. Even if the object seems good, a wrong intention can
make the act evil.
For example, praying or fasting “to be seen by others” is not good because the motive is pride.
Some acts are always evil, no matter the intention or situation, such as:
 Blasphemy
 Perjury (lying under oath)
 Murder
 Adultery
 Fornication
✨ Moral Reminder: We must never do evil even if we think good may come from it.

B. Guided by Scripture and Church Teaching

God has given us the freedom to choose between good and evil. This freedom is part of being created in the
image of God, and it calls us to act in harmony with His will.

To use freedom rightly, we need:

 Self-discipline,
 Knowledge of God’s Word, and
 A well-formed conscience.

Choosing the good is not only about personal gain; it reflects God’s love and grace in our daily life. “Not my
will, but Yours be done.” — Luke 22:42

Jesus is our perfect model of choosing the good. In the Garden of Gethsemane, He obeyed the Father’s will
even when it led to suffering. His obedience shows that true freedom is found in surrendering to God and
doing what is right.

C. The Reality of Sin

Sin is what separates us from God and harms our relationship with others.
According to the Catechism (CCC 1849): “Sin is an offense against reason, truth, and right conscience; it is
failure in genuine love for God and neighbor.” Sin begins when we choose something contrary to God’s will.

D. Kinds of Sin

knowledge, and deliberate consent.
3. Venial Sin  A lesser sin that weakens, but does not completely break, our relationship with God.
Kind of Sin Meaning
4. Personal
 A deliberate act, word, or thought against God’s law committed by an individual.

E. Four Forms of Sin

Sin appears in four basic forms that show how we fail to love:

1. Sins of Thought – harboring hatred, envy, or impure thoughts.

2. Sins of Word – using speech to hurt, insult, or deceive others.
3. Sins of Deed – committing harmful or unjust actions.
4. Sins of Omission – failing to do what is right or to help those in need.

✨ Example: Ignoring a hungry classmate or staying silent when someone is bullied are sins of omission.

F. The Seven Deadly Sins

These are the root causes of other sins and lead the heart away from God:

Deadly Sin Meaning

1. Pride  Excessive love of self; desire to be superior to others.
2. Lust  Intense craving for pleasure, especially sexual.
3. Gluttony  Overindulgence in food or drink.
4. Greed  Love of money or possessions beyond need.
5. Sloth  Laziness in physical and especially spiritual life.
6. Anger (Wrath)  Uncontrolled rage or hatred toward others.
7. Envy  Sadness or jealousy over others’ success or blessings.

Each of these vices can grow if we do not guard our hearts with prayer, humility, and love.

IV. Reflection

 Do my daily choices reflect love for God and others?

 When I sin, do I take responsibility and seek forgiveness?
 How can I follow Jesus’ example of obedience to God’s will?

V. Practical Ways to Choose Good and Avoid Evil

1. Pray regularly for strength and guidance.

2. Examine your conscience before sleeping.
3. Receive the sacraments, especially Confession and the Eucharist.
4. Avoid near occasions of sin (people, places, or habits that lead you to do wrong).
5. Practice virtue — humility, patience, honesty, and charity.
6. Follow Jesus’ example in obeying the Father’s will.
