1. Write the following functions in the form f (z) = u( x, y) + iv( x, y).

2. Express the following functions by a formula involving z and z.

3. Express f (z) = z21 − 5z7 + 9z4 in the polar form and then find f (−1 + i ).

4. Let f (z) = ln(r ) + iθ, where r = |z| and θ = Arg(z). Find f (−2) and f (− 3 + i ).

5. Discuss the convergence of the sequence zn in each of the following cases.

9. Find the following limits.

10. Discuss the continuity of the function f (z) at the given point z0 .

11. Let f (z) be continuous for all values of z.

(a) Show that g(z) = f (z) is continuous for all values of z.

(c) Use the above parts to conclude that the functions f 1 (z) = z, f 2 (z) = Re(z), f 3 (z) =
Im(z) and f 4 (z) = |z| are all continuous.

12. Use the Cauchy-Riemann equations to show that the following functions are differen-
tiable for all z and find f ′ (z).

a) f (z) = iz + 4i b) f (z) = −2( xy + x ) + i ( x2 − 2y − y2 )


c) f (z) = z3 d) f (z) = e2xy cos(y2 − x2 ) + i sin(y2 − x2 )


13. Use the Cauchy-Riemann equations to show that the following functions are nowhere
differentiable. Do these functions satisfy the Cauchy-Riemann equations at any point?

c) f (z) = ey cos x + iey sin x

14. Find the constants a and b such that f (z) = (2x − y) + i ( ax + by) is differentiable for all
z.
