WEEKLY DRILL NO.1
Topic: Normal, Shear and Bearing Stress
Instruction: Write your answers on a separate sheet of a long bond paper/ newsprint.
Write legibly.
Provide the necessary illustrations or free-body diagrams.
Your work/output will also be evaluated based on its presentation.
Box and round off your final answers to two decimal places.
Situation - The bar ABCD in the figure consists of three cylindrical steel segments with different lengths and
cross-sectional areas. Axial loads are applied as shown.
1. Calculate the normal stress in segment AB. _________________
2. Calculate the normal stress in segment BC. _________________
3. Calculate the normal stress in segment CD. _________________
Situation - The cross-sectional area of each member of the
truss is 1800 mm2.
4. Calculate the normal stress in members DF.

5. Calculate the normal stress in members DE.
_________________
Situation - The lap joint is connected by three 20-mm-diameter rivets.
Assume that the axial load P = 50 kN is distributed equally among the three
rivets.
6. Find the bearing stress between a plate and a rivet.
_________________
7. Find the maximum average tensile stress in each plate. _________________
8. Assume that the axial load P applied to the lap joint is distributed equally among the three 20-mm
diameter rivets. What is the maximum load P that can be applied if the allowable stresses are 40 MPa
for shear in rivets, 90 MPa for bearing between a plate and a rivet, and 120 MPa for tension in the plates?
_________________
Situation - A circular hole is to be punched in a plate that has a shear strength
of 40 ksi (see figure). The working compressive stress for the punch is 50 ksi.
9. Compute the maximum thickness of the plate in which a hole 2.5 in. in
diameter can be punched. _________________
10. If the plate is 0.25 in. thick, determine the diameter of the smallest hole
that can be punched. _________________
11. The column consists of a wooden post and a concrete footing, separated by a steel
bearing plate. Find the maximum safe value of the axial load P if the working stresses
are 1000 psi for wood and 450 psi for concrete. _________________
Situation - In the clevis shown in the figure below.
12. Find the minimum bolt diameter that will support a load P = 14 kips without exceeding a
shearing stress of 12 ksi. _________________
13. Find minimum thickness of each yoke that will support a load P = 14 kips without exceeding
a bearing stress of 20 ksi. _________________

Situation - The 250 mm x 700 mm rectangular wood panel is formed by gluing together two
boards along the 30°seam.
14. Determine the normal stress in the glued joint if P =10kN. _________________
15. Determine the shear stress in the glued joint if P = 10kN. _________________
Situation - A beam is loaded as shown in the figure.
16. Determine the shear stress in the 20-mm-diameter pin at
A. _________________
17. Determine the shear stress in the 30-mm-diameter pin at
B. _________________
18. A hollow steel tube with an outside diameter of 200 mm
is subjected to an axial tensile force of 400 kN as shown in the figure. Determine the thickness of the
tube if the stress is limited to 130 MPa. _________________
Situation - Rigid bar ABC is supported by a pin at A and axial member
(1), which has a cross-sectional area of 540 mm2. The weight of rigid
bar ABC can be neglected.
19. Determine the normal stress in member (1) if a load of P = 8 kN
is applied at C. _________________
20. If the maximum normal stress in member (1) must be limited to
50 MPa, what is the maximum load magnitude P that may be
applied to the rigid bar at C? _________________
21. Chain members (1) and (2) are connected by a shackle and pin. If the axial force in the chains is P = 28
kN and the allowable shear stress in the pin is τallow = 90 MPa, determine the minimum acceptable
diameter d for the pin.
Situation - A steel pipe column (6.5 in. outside diameter; 0.25 in. wall
thickness) supports a load of 11 kips. The steel pipe rests on a square steel
base plate, which in turn rests on a concrete slab.
22. Determine the bearing stress between the steel pipe and the steel
plate.
23. If the bearing stress of the steel plate on the concrete slab must be
limited to 90 psi, what is the minimum allowable plate dimension a?
24. A 120 mm wide steel bar with a butt-welded joint, as
shown, will be used to carry an axial tension load of P
= 180 kN. If the normal and shear stresses on the
plane of the butt weld must be limited to 80 MPa and
45 MPa, respectively, determine the minimum thick
ness required for the bar.
25. A 50 mm wide steel bar has axial loads applied at points B, C, and D. If the normal stress magnitude in
the bar must not exceed 60 MPa, determine the minimum thickness that can be used for the bar.
Alam kong hindi madali, pero alam ko ring kaya mo. Every small step is progress.
