Building Collapse – Easy Explanation

What is a Building Collapse?

A building collapse is when a building or a part of it suddenly falls down because it can’t support its
own weight or extra load.
It usually happens very fast and causes a lot of damage.

Why Do Buildings Collapse? (Main Causes)

A collapse usually happens due to multiple problems together:

Structural Problems

• Wrong Design – engineers miscalculate load (e.g., adding more floors without proper
support)

• Bad Construction – poor quality concrete/steel, wrong methods, unskilled workers

External Forces

• Heavy rain, storms, strong winds

• Earthquakes, floods, landslides

• Fire – heat weakens steel and it bends

Foundation Issues

• Weak soil, changes in groundwater, not enough depth → building sinks or tilts

Poor Maintenance or Unsafe Changes

• Removing load-bearing columns or walls

• Old buildings not repaired

• Rusting of steel inside concrete (called concrete cancer)

Types of Building Collapse

(Based on the shape of debris and void spaces)

Type of Collapse Shape Survival Chances

Floors fall straight on each other like Very low (few spaces to
Pancake Collapse
pancakes survive)

Progressive Collapse One failure spreads to whole building Very dangerous

V-Frame Collapse Middle portion falls, sides stand → V shape Better chances (side voids)

A-Frame/Tent
Looks like a tent, sides go outwards Some safe spaces near edges

Lean-to Collapse One side falls, one side supported

Cantilever Collapse Part hangs dangerously Very risky for rescuers

Case Study: Moulivakkam Building Collapse (Chennai – 2014)

• Date: 28 June 2014

• Place: Moulivakkam, Chennai

• Building: 11-storey building under construction

• Deaths: 61 construction workers

• Second tower: Later demolished because it was unsafe

What Really Caused the Collapse?

Investigations found it was not an accident:

✔ Violating building rules

✔ Weak design & poor foundation
✔ Low-quality materials
✔ Columns removed in basement to create parking → structure became weak
✔ Heavy rain and lightning added pressure on the already weak building

It was described as a failure of safety, planning, and construction practices.

How to Prevent Building Collapses?

Strong Rules & Checking

• Government must inspect every building during foundation, column work, and each floor

• Strict punishment for builders who break rules

Better Design for Climate

• Buildings must handle floods, heavy rain, strong winds

• Independent engineers should regularly check high-rise buildings

Accountability & Transparency

• Compulsory insurance for workers and residents

• Builders must provide safety certificates to buyers

• Money security deposit for compensation if collapse happens

Conclusion Line for Exam

Building collapses can be avoided if buildings are designed properly, constructed with good
quality materials, regularly inspected, and maintained with full responsibility.
