EDGE COMPUTING

Introduction: Edge computing is a modern computing architecture that brings data storage and
processing closer to the location where it is needed, such as IoT devices or local edge servers.
Instead of sending all data to a centralized cloud server, edge computing processes data “at the
edge” of the network, near the data source. This reduces latency, improves speed, and enhances
reliability. Example: In a smart city, instead of sending traffic camera footage to a distant cloud for
analysis, edge computing allows the camera itself (or a nearby node) to process video data
instantly and manage traffic lights in real time.

Uses / Applications: 1. Internet of Things (IoT): Smart homes, smart factories, and wearable
devices use edge computing for quick data processing. 2. Autonomous Vehicles: Cars use edge
computing to process sensor and camera data instantly for safe driving decisions. 3. Healthcare:
Medical devices analyze patient data in real time for faster diagnosis. 4. Retail: Edge computing
supports personalized shopping experiences and faster payment systems. 5. Industrial Automation:
Factories use it for predictive maintenance and efficient machine operations. 6.
Telecommunications (5G): Edge servers placed near users enhance network performance and
reduce delay.

Advantages: 1. Reduced Latency: Faster data processing because data doesn’t travel to a distant
cloud. 2. Improved Reliability: Works even with limited or no internet connection. 3. Enhanced
Security: Sensitive data can be processed locally instead of being transmitted over networks. 4.
Bandwidth Efficiency: Reduces the load on cloud and network bandwidth. 5. Real-time Decision
Making: Perfect for applications needing instant responses (e.g., autonomous vehicles, robotics).

Future of Edge Computing: - Integration with AI and 5G: Future edge devices will combine AI for
smart decision-making and 5G for ultra-fast communication. - Expansion in IoT: As IoT grows, edge
computing will become essential for managing massive data from connected devices. - Smarter
Infrastructure: Smart cities, factories, and healthcare systems will increasingly rely on edge
networks. - Hybrid Cloud-Edge Systems: Cloud computing and edge computing will work together
for optimal performance and flexibility. - Sustainability: Localized processing reduces energy use
and carbon footprint compared to large data centers.
