GLOBALIZATION: MEANING, EVOLUTION, DIMENSIONS, IMPACTS & CHALLENGES

1. INTRODUCTION Globalization is one of the most significant and transformative phenomena

shaping the contemporary world. It refers to the growing interconnectedness and interdependence
among people, countries, institutions, and economies across the world. While the idea appears
simple, globalization is multi-dimensional, complex, and historically rooted. It influences politics,
culture, economy, environment, technology, social structures, and everyday life.

Modern globalization is characterized by the rapid flow of goods, services, information, ideas,
technology, finance, and people across borders. It has created what many scholars call a
“borderless world,” where national boundaries become less significant in regulating economic and
cultural exchanges.

However, globalization is not universally positive. It brings both opportunities and challenges. It can
enhance growth, connectivity, and knowledge exchange, but it can also deepen inequalities,
homogenize cultures, strain local economies, and create new forms of dependence.

2. MEANING OF GLOBALIZATION Globalization does not have a single universally accepted

definition. Scholars, economists, and sociologists have defined it in different ways.

Anthony Giddens defines globalization as “the intensification of worldwide social relations which link
distant localities in such a way that local happenings are shaped by events occurring many miles
away.” Joseph Stiglitz sees globalization as “the closer integration of countries and peoples of the
world, brought about by the reduction of transportation and communication costs and the breaking
down of artificial barriers.”
