Leo the Young Explorer
Leo is not a famous scientist, but he is a brave explorer. He is
only ten years old, but he wants to discover new things about
the ocean. Leo doesn’t live near the sea, but he has to visit the
aquarium often to learn. He reads books, watches
documentaries, and builds things with his best friend Max.
Last month, Leo and Max decided to build a rocket from boxes
and tubes in Max’s backyard. “We want to go to space,” Max
said. But Leo smiled and replied, “Let’s visit the ocean first!” So
instead of a spaceship, they built a submarine using cardboard,
tape, and old plastic bottles.
Inside the submarine, they drew compound nouns like jellyfish,
starfish, fish tank, and seaweed forest. They made buttons from
bottle caps and added a control panel from a cereal box.
“Although it’s not real, it feels real!” Leo laughed.
Leo pretended to wear goggles and a wetsuit. He imagined
himself swimming with a dolphin, waving at a penguin, and
finding a leafy sea dragon. “Do I have to wear a diving hose?”
he asked Max. “Yes! Or you won’t breathe underwater!” Max
answered.
In his imagination, Leo became a diver. He swam through coral
reefs, saw a squid chase an octopus, and floated past a huge
humpback whale. He even rescued an otter caught in kelp.
“Do we need to return to the base?” Max asked. “Not yet,” said
Leo. “Although the water is freezing, I want to stay a little
longer.”
In the end, they didn’t really go anywhere, but they learned a lot
and had fun. Leo wrote about the adventure in his explorer’s
journal, and Max added a drawing of the rocket-submarine.
