as per the CBSE guidelines for the academic year 2024–2025.

teacher.

3. OBJECTIVES

The main objectives of this project are:

1. To understand the theme of the story The Rattrap by Selma Lagerlöf.

2. To analyze how love, compassion, and understanding can transform human behavior.

3. To explore the psychological aspect of loneliness and its effect on human actions.

4. To study the character development of the rattrap seller.

5. To examine the significance of kindness shown by Edla Willmansson.

6. To highlight the moral message conveyed in the story.

7. To appreciate the author’s technique of storytelling.

4. ABOUT THE AUTHOR – SELMA LAGERLÖF

Selma Ottilia Lovisa Lagerlöf (1858–1940) was a Swedish novelist and the first woman to win the Nobel
Prize in Literature in 1909.

She is known for her strong moral values, insightful character portrayals, and deep understanding of
human psychology.

Her writing often reflects themes of compassion, kindness, and the ability of goodness to overcome
evil.

The Rattrap is one of her most inspiring stories, focusing on the power of empathy in transforming a
human soul.

5. INTRODUCTION: THE RATTRAP

The Rattrap is a touching story revolving around a poor peddler who sells rattraps made of wire. He is
lonely, hungry, and poor, and therefore believes that the whole world is a big rattrap.

The story captures human loneliness, temptation to commit wrong, need for love and acceptance, and
transformation through compassion.

6. THEME: LONELINESS & NEED FOR BONDING

The peddler has no family, no friends, and no home. His poverty pushes him into mistrust, bitterness,
and isolation.

Loneliness leads to negative thinking, hopelessness, and wrong choices. The story shows that
emotional bonding and kindness can change a person.

7. KINDNESS, COMPASSION & HUMANITY

Edla Willmansson treats the peddler with respect and kindness, which leads to his transformation.

Her warmth, trust, and compassion awaken the goodness within him.

8. ESSENTIAL GOODNESS CAN BE AWAKENED

The story proves that no one is permanently bad. Circumstances push people toward wrong actions,
but kindness reforms them.

The peddler returns the stolen money, showing complete moral transformation.

9. THE LETTER BY THE RATTRAP PEDDLER

The peddler thanks Edla for treating him like a real human being and returns the crofter’s money
through her.

He signs the letter as “Captain von Stahle,” proving he now respects himself.
10. CONCLUSION

The Rattrap beautifully presents that humans are not inherently evil. Love, trust, and empathy have the
power to awaken goodness.

The story is a lesson that everyone deserves a second chance.
