Relative Clauses

Relative clauses are sentences that add information to a sentence. They are introduced by relative
pronouns or adverbs.

Which things, ideas
Whose possessions, relationships

Relative Adverbs
When time
Where place
Why reason

Defining Relative Clauses


They add information necessary to have a complete idea.

Non-defining Relative Clauses


They add extra information that is not necessary to understand the whole idea.

Examples
- Tom is the boy who won the gold medal. (Defining)
- This is the restaurant where we celebrated my birthday. (Defining)
- The book which I found on the sofa is interesting. (Defining)
- Tom, who won the gold medal, is my cousin. (Non-defining)
- This restaurant, where I celebrate my birthday, has excellent service. (Non-defining)
- This movie, which I saw yesterday, was very boring. (Non-defining)
