Tutorial #7: Basic Statistics for Design of Experiments
Problems to be solved in class by the TA with students’ participation: 1, 3
Problems to be solved by students and submitted at the end of the class: 2, 4

1) Two machines are used for filling plastic bottles with a net volume of 16.0 ounces.
The fill volume can be assumed normal. A member of the quality engineering staff
suspects that both machines fill to the same mean net volume, whether or not this
volume is 16.0 ounces. A random sample of 10 bottles is taken from the output of
each machine.

16.05 16.02 16.01 16.01
16.02 15.99 15.99 16.00
Do you think the engineer is correct? Use = 0.05.
2) Two different formulations of an oxygenated motor fuel are being tested to study their
road octane numbers. Two random samples of size n1 = 15 and n2 = 20 are tested, and
the mean road octane numbers observed are 89.6 and 92.5. Assume normality, while
the sample variance for formulation 1 is s12 = 1.5, and for formulation 2 it is s22 = 1.2.
If formulation 2 produces a higher road octane number than formulation 1, the
manufacturer would like to detect it. Use paired t-test to Formulate and test an
appropriate hypothesis, using = 0.05.
3) A study was conducted to determine if the drying time for a certain paint is
affected by the type of applicator used. The data in the table below represents the
drying time (in minutes) for 3 different applicators when the paint was applied to
standard wallboard. Is there any evidence to suggest the type of applicator has a
significant effect on the paint drying time at the 0.05 level?

4) An aluminum producer manufactures carbon anodes and bakes them in a ring
furnace prior to use in the smelting operation. The baked density of the anode is an
important quality characteristic, as it may affect anode life. One of the process
engineers suspects that firing temperature in the ring furnace affects baked anode
density. An experiment was run at four different temperature levels, and six
anodes were baked at each temperature level. The data from the experiment are
shown in next table.

575 41.0 40.6 41.8 41.2 41.9 41.5
Does firing temperature in the ring furnace affect mean baked anode density?
5) An electronics engineer is interested in the effect on tube conductivity of four
different types of coating for cathode ray tubes in a telecommunication system
display device. The following conductivity data are obtained.

1 143 141 150 146
2 152 149 137 143
3 134 133 132 127
4 129 127 132 129
Is there any difference in conductivity due to coating type? Use = 0.05.
