Project Title
Maximizing the volume of a water tank fabricated from a flat rectangular
metal sheet measuring 10m by 6m
Purpose of Project
Due to the constant water shortages in the community Mr. Rondel Rodney the Mayor of the

community has hired an engineer to create a metal tank from a steel sheet measuring 10m by 6m

and told him to maximize the volume. The tank will be used to store water for times at which

water in the community is scarce. To do two methods to find the maximum volumes of two tanks

which are a rectangular tank and a cylindrical tank; He intends to approach both tanks with

graphical and a calculus process to see if which tank design can hold the maximum amount of

water
Mathematical Formulation
Solution 1#: Rectangular Tank

From each corner of the rectangular sheet, even squares with an area of (x) x (x) were cut out in

order to form a cuboid without a roof when folded.

Length (l)= (10- 2x)m 10-2(x)m

Width (w) = (6-2x)m

Height (h) = (x)m

volume(v) is found by the equation (length (l) x width (w) x height(h))m3

Therefore, the volume of the cuboid can be found by the equation:

v = (10-2x) x (6-2x) x (x)

v = (60 – 20x - 12x + 4x2) x (x)

v = 60x – 20x^2 – 12x2 + 4x2

v = 4x3 – 32x2 + 60x

therefore, the volume of the cuboid is (4x3 – 32x2 + 60x)m3

Solution #2 Cylindrical tank

Assuming it has minimum wastage the total surface area of the cylindrical tank is equal to

circular area add curved surface area

Total Area= Circular Area + Curved surface Area

Volume of a cylinder = m2 x h

It could be said that in solution 2, the water can be stored for Mr. Rodney’s community during

the water shortage in the cylindrical tank

Application of Solution
Mr. Rodney first found an expression for the volume of the rectangular sheet when shaped into a

cuboid, (4x3 -32x2+ 60x)m3. He used the differentiation method to determine the stationary

points which will give him the maximum point. This tells him what x value gives the max

amount of volume. He then used the second derivative to find the max volume. He found that

maximum volume is when x is equal to 1.2m. The volume of the cuboid is 32.832m3. He used

the rectangular sheet metal sheet, and shaped it into a cylinder. He formed an expression for the

volume of the cylinder, 𝜋2𝑥ℎ. Then Mr. Rodney differentiated the expression to find r. He

found the second derivative and plugged r into it, which tells him that the maximum volume

when r is equal to 2.5m.

In conclusion, he found that the cylinder tank holds a lager amount of volume which was

50.456m3
Discussion of
findings/Conclusion
Given the flat rectangular plate, we were tasked with finding which shape either a cuboid or

cylinder would give the greatest volume. It was found that the Cuboid had the lesser volume.

That was found to be 32.832m3using both graphical and calculus methods. This validated our

solution as both volumes yielded the same result. For Cuboid, the value of x meters(m) that

gave the maximum was 1.2(m). In contrast it was cylindrical tank had the largest volume which

was found to be 50.456m3using both the graphical and calculus methods. This Confirmed our

solution as both methods yielded the same results. For Cylinder, the value of r meters(m) that

gave the maximum was 2.5(m). some advantages for the cylinder as compared to the cuboid is it

less bulky and it will occupy less space. From calculation the cylinder has the greater volume

and is the better option for storage. It was assumed that the surface area of the cylinder was the

same as the rectangular sheet. This will be a source of error as material was lost in creating the

cylindrical tank.
