■ Earth’s Rotation — Day and Night (Answer Key)

Part 1: Understanding Rotation


1. Earth’s axis is an imaginary line running from the North Pole to the South Pole around which Earth
spins.
2. 24 hours (one day).
3. As Earth rotates, different sides face toward or away from the Sun, causing day and night.
4. Earth’s tilt (23.5°) causes different areas to receive different amounts of sunlight during the year.
5. 3 rotations.
6. Earth is huge compared to humans, so we don’t feel the motion.
7. West to east.
8. It will be nighttime; Venezuela will have rotated to the dark side of Earth.

• (H) Sydney — Late night
Challenge Question: When it’s noon in London, it’s about 9:00 p.m. in Tokyo and 7:00 a.m. in New
