Bio-luminescence, the intrinsic production of light by living organisms like jellyfish, fireflies,
plankton, anglerfish, and some fungi, offers a green and energy-efficient lighting option. This study
examines the biochemical process underlying the luciferin-luciferase reaction and considers its
potential for application in green lighting systems. Through examination of the intensity, efficiency,
and sustainability of bio-luminescent organisms, this research provides a comparative analysis with
traditional artificial lighting.
The results feature new uses, such as bio-luminescent street lamps, ocean surveillance systems, and
eco-friendly street lighting, highlighting high energy savings and environmental impact. The work
contributes to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, in
the promotion of renewable energy resources, and SDG 14: Life Below Water, in support of marine
conservation and monitoring of ocean health.
As energy needs grow around the world, bio-luminescence offers a hopeful, nature-inspired answer
to self-sustaining lighting systems.
