Direction: Answer each question and show your solution. (Indicate the Given in the problem when you solve)

1. An undisturbed sample of medium sand weighs 500 g. The rectangular core samples is 6cm x 8cm x 7 cm.
The sample is oven dried for 24 hrs. at 110 degrees Celsius to remove water content. At the end of drying, the
sample weighs 450 g. Assume that the PD = 2.56 g/cm3
a. Calculate the bulk density (BD) of the soil

b. Calculate the percent porosity (%Porosity) of the soil

2. Given that the 4 min. and 2 hr. hydrometer reading are 40 and 15 respectively. Assume that a 50g of soil
sample is used.

a. Calculate the percent sand, silt and clay

b. Determine the texture by plotting it in the soil textural triangle

3. Calculate the particle density (PD) of the soil given that its bulk density is 1.20 g/cm3 and a percent porosity
of 53%.
