Vertical Inline Tertiary Water Pumps Guide
General
This section comprises the supply, erection, testing and commissioning of Pumps required for chilled water circulation for
Tertiary Pumps shall be suitable for the purpose they are intended.
Scope:
The scope of this consists of but is not necessarily limited to the following:
a) Manufacture, supply & Commissioning of pumps with associated motors, starters and accessories.
b) -ordination and start-up and testing
supervision.
c) Testing (factory & field), start-up supervision, training and providing necessary documentation and tools for
operation.
d) Carry out performance test run
Design
The pumps shall Vertical Inline Split Coupled. Pump design must be split -coupled with inside/ outside mounted
mechanical seals & allow the seals to be serviced without disturbing the motor or pump connections.
The pump shall be capable of developing the required total head at rated capacity for continuous operation. The pump
shall operate satisfactorily at any point on discharge head characteristic curve over a range of 30% to 120% capacity or
capacity corresponding to 70% of the total head whichever is lower. The pump shall run smooth without undue noise,
vibration. Efficiency of the pumps at selection should be preferably 77% or above. All external and exposed cast iron
parts of pumps should have an epoxy-based coating made in a cathodic electro-deposition (CED) process.
Construction
Pumps shall be Vertical Inline type conform to IS 1620. The motor shall be screen protected.
i) Casing Cast Iron, with PN16 & ANSI Class 125 / DIN flanges for working
pressure to 225 psi at 65°C. it should consist of air release cock, drain
plug and shaft seal arrangement as well as flanges for suction and
delivery pipe connection as required
i) Impeller Gunmetal or Bronze (BS1400 LG2C) / SS304 Grade CF8 ASTM A743,
fully enclosed and dynamically balanced. Two-plane balancing is
required as per ISO Grade 6.3. The selected pump set shall have an
impeller size not more than 90% of the largest impeller that the model
of the pump set can house.
iii) Shaft Stainless Steel EN 1.4021 / AISI 420 . It should be balanced to avoid
vibration at any speed within the operating range of the pump.
iv) Shaft sleeve Bronze or Gunmetal and shall be extended over full length of stuffing
box (If applicable)
v) Bearings
Heavy duty ball / Bearing shall meet L-10 rating life up to 50000 hours
vi) Flanges Suction and discharge connections shall be equally sized of ANSI 125 /
DIN flanges, and shall be drilled and tapped for seal flush and gauge
connections
vii) Seal Mechanical seals shall be stainless steel multi-spring outside balanced
type, carbon rotating face and silicon / tungsten carbide stationary
seat.
ix) Driver type Motor shall meet IEC (where applicable specifications and shall be of
the size, voltage and enclosure called for on the plans. Pump and motor
shall be factory aligned, and shall be realigned by the contractor as per
factory recommendations after installation. Motor shall be energy
efficient with IE3 rating, totally enclosed, fan-cooled, Class-F
insulation. Motor shall be suitable for 415±10% volts, 3 phase, 50
cycles AC, power supply.
Pumps of a particular category shall be identical and shall be suitable for parallel operation with equal load division.
Components of identical pumps shall be interchangeable.
Impeller shall be made in one piece and securely keyed to the shaft. Measures to prevent loosening during operation
including rotation in the reverse direction shall be provided.
The critical speed of the pump shall be at least 20% above the rated speed. All the pumps shall be provided with
mechanical seals.
If Required, Suitable holes shall be provided for grouting and these shall be so located that the base can be grouted.
Foundation bolts shall be complete with nuts and washers (if required).
The performance curves (capacity vs. total head, efficiency, NPSH and KW requirement) ranging from 0 to maximum
capacity along with pump catalogue indicating dimensional details shall be submitted by the contractor along with their
technical submittals for approval of Engineer-in-charge before procurement.
Driver ratings should be at least 15% in excess of the maximum B.H.P of the pump plus transmission losses if any. Drivers
shall be supplied with starters unless otherwise stated.
Pump motor
The motor shall be screening protected drip proof (SPDP) fan cooled or TEFC type. The efficiency class of motors shall be
IE 3 class as per IS 12615. The pump shall be centrifugal type direct driven with a 3 phase, 415±10% volts, 50Hz., A.C.
insulated and suitable for 415 volts, + 10%, 50 Hz., 3 phase AC supply. Enclosures shall have protection of IP 55 for Indoor
applications and IP 65 for outdoor applications. Starter for the motor shall be direct on line (D.O.L) for motors up to and
including 5 H.P. rating and automatic star -delta type for motors of higher ratings unless otherwise specified in the tender
specifications. Starters shall be rated for intermittent duty. Starting current should not exceed two times the full load
current. The starter shall be mounted on the main electrical control panel/ unit mounted/ self-mounted as specified. Each
starter shall be provided with the following protections:
VFD to be considered for Primary Variable flow & DOL/ Star delta to be considered for Condenser water pumps.
At duty condition of pump water flow & head and resultant power consumption, it will be less than 85 dBA at 1.5 m
distance.
Suction and discharge shut off valves (butterfly type) and discharge dual plate check valves as specified in BOQ.
Suction and discharge pressure gauges not less than 100mm dia and of the appropriate rating with gauge cocks etc.
suction gauge shall be of compound type.
Installation
Pump shall be installed as per manufacturer's recommendations.
Pump-sets shall preferably be factory aligned, wherever necessary, site alignment shall be done by competent person.
Testing
Tenderers shall submit the performance curves of the pumps supplied by them. They shall also check the capacity and
total head requirements of each pump to match his own piping and equipment layout.
On completion of the entire installation, pumps shall be tested, wherever possible, for their discharge, head, flow rate,
B.H.P. Where it is not possible at least the discharge, head and B.H.P. (as measured on the input side) shall be field tested.
Test results shall correspond to the performance curves.
Both the drive and the pump to be tested together and the same drive shall be delivered to site.
Pump testing procedure shall be shared in advance and shall be approved by client.
All the functions of the variable speed drive shall be tested and witnessed before shipment.
Painting
After complete installation and testing, pumps accessories and fittings shall be given two coats as per Engineer -In-Charge.

SUBMITTALS
A. Submittals shall include the following:
1. System summary sheet
2. Sequence of operation
3. Shop drawing indicating dimensions, required clearances and location and size of each field
connection
4. Power and control wiring diagrams
5. System profile analysis including variable speed pump curves and system curve. The analysis
shall also include pump, motor and AFD efficiencies, staging points, horsepower and
kilowatt/ hour consumption.
6. Pump data sheets
7. Submittals must be specific to this project. Generic submittals will not be accepted.
QUALITY ASSURANCE
1. The pump manufacturer shall assemble the pumping package.
2. An assembler of pumping systems not actively engaged in the design and construction of centrifugal pumps shall not
be considered a pump manufacturer.
3. The manufacturer shall assume "Unit Responsibility" for the complete pumping package.
4. Unit responsibility shall be defined as responsibility for interface and successful operation of all
system components supplied by the pumping system manufacturer.
5. The manufacturer shall have a minimum of 10 years of experience in the design and construction of variable speed
pumping systems.
6. The local supplier of Chilled Water Variable Speed Pumping System (VSPS) must have relevant expertise in all
aspects of design, application engineering, Installation, programming, interfacing, commissioning and after sales
service. Supplier must have, as a minimum, commissioned 25 sets of chilled water VSPS in India.
7. All functions of the variable speed pump control system shall be tested at the factory prior to
shipment.
8. This test shall be conducted with motors connected to AFD output and it shall test all inputs, outputs and program
execution specific to this application.
9. The manufacturer shall be fully certified by the International Standards Organization per ISO9001 & the factory
should be UL/ FM approved.
10. Manufacturer shall be listed by Underwriter's Laboratories as a manufacturer of packaged pumping systems.
11. Bidders shall comply with all sections of this specification relating to packaged pumping systems.
12. Any deviations from this specification shall be bid as a voluntary alternate clearly defined in writing. If no
exceptions are noted, the supplier or contractor shall be bound by these specifications
MANUFACTURED UNITS
1. The control system shall include as, a minimum, the programmable logic pump controller, adjustable frequency
drive(s) and remote sensor/ transmitters as indicated on the plans. Provide additional items as specified or as required
to properly execute the sequence of operation.
2. The variable speed pump logic controller, adjustable frequency drive(s), AFD bypass (if included in BOQ) and
remote sensor/ transmitter(s) shall ship as individual components to the job site.
COMPONENTS
A. Pump Logic Controller
1. All switchgear items are UL listed & Enclosure is fabricated locally & assembled.
2. The controller shall function to a proven program that safeguards against damaging hydraulic conditions
including:
Pump flow surges
Hunting
End of curve
System over pressure
3. The pump logic controller shall be capable of receiving up to two discrete analog inputs from zone
sensor/ transmitter as indicated on the plans.
4. It will then select the analog signal that has deviated the greatest amount from its set point.
5. This selected signal will be used as the command feedback input for a hydraulic stabilization function to minimize
hunting.
6. Each input signal shall be capable of maintaining a different set point value. Controller shall be capable of
controlling up to three pumps in parallel.
7. The pump logic controller shall be capable of accepting an additional analog input for a flow sensor.
8. This input shall serve as the criteria for the end of curve protection algorithm.

to VFD vendor. Cost of such analysis shall be included.
f) Unless specified otherwise, EMC Filters shall be provided (Integral or externally mounted) for all the Drive
The suppliers of VFDs shall include additional EMC filters if required to meet compliance to this requirement.

h) The VFD shall have temperature-controlled cooling fan(s) for quiet operation, minimized losses, and increased
fan life. At low loads or low ambient temperatures, the fan(s) may be off even when the VFD is running.
i) Protect from output switching: The VFD shall be fully protected from switching a contactor/ isolator at the
output without causing tripping e.g.: for switching on/ off the isolators of the AHU / ventilation fans / pumps
near the motor with VFD in ON mode.
j) The VFD shall store in memory the last 10 alarms. A description of the alarm, and the date and time of the
alarm shall be recorded.

also have individual Fan, Pump, and Compressor menus specifically
applications.
10. VFD shall be provided with PID controller having feedbacks if indicated in schedule of quantity. This feature is
to eliminate DDC panel by IBMS system vendor and use VFD itself as DDC. In such case, consultant can provide
control scheme sketch to VFD manufacturer so that complete control system is fully configured in VFD.
11. This VFD shall be able to accept minimum 2 feedback signals. It shall be programmable to compare the
feedback signals to a common set point or to individual set points and to automatically select either the
maximum or minimum deviating signal as the controlling signal. It shall also be possible to calculate the
controlling feedback signal as the average of all feedback signals or the difference between a pair of feedback
signals.
12. The VFD shall be able to apply individual scaling to each feedback signal.
13. For fan flow tracking applications, the VFD shall be able to calculate the square root of any or all individual
feedback signals so that a pressure sensor can be used to measure air flow.

Serial Communications:

number of restart attempts shall be selectable from 0 through 20 or infinitely and the time between attempts
shall be adjustable from 0 through 600 seconds.

All optional features shall be built and mounted by VFD manufacturer as an inbuilt factory solution. All optional
features shall be UL listed by the VFD manufacturer as a complete assembly and carry a UL label.
Service Conditions:

Quality Assurance:
1. To ensure quality, the complete VFD shall be tested by the manufacturer. The VFD shall drive a motor
connected to a dynamometer at full load and speed and shall be cycled during the automated test procedure.
2. All optional features shall be functionally tested at the factory for proper operation.
The operation is based on the circulation of the sponge ball through the condenser tube. The sponge ball shall be pushed
to the condenser inlet in not more than 5 seconds by a high flow of water (min.7L/ S) which shall be produced by a high-
pressure source at least 2 bar higher than the injection point at the condenser inlet, The passing balls should be slightly
larger in diameter than the tubes. The scrubbing and wiping action of the balls must be capable of preventing build-up of
deposits on the tube surface. In addition, the friction of the passing balls should be suitable for removal of accumulating
residue every few minutes before it can adhere to the tube walls.
The negative pressure shall let the ball return from the ball trap unit back to the collector where the rinsing of the balls is
carried out and then water is discharged to the outlet header of Condenser which goes to cooling tower.
After leaving condenser the balls shall be trapped inside the ball trap unit. The ball shall wait in the collector until the next
injection cycle. The time of the collection cycle is normally pre-set at 27 minutes.
The proposed system should be manufactured and complied with ISO 14001:2015, ISO 9001:2015. Auto Tube cleaning
System shall be dedicated for each chiller or centralized for condensers.
The system must be CE + RoHS compliant and in accordance with UL standards. The proposed system should eliminate
costly downtime, improve the heat exchanger performance & prevents deration of heat exchanger.
