Introduction
A project is characterized as a series of activities that need to be finished in order to achieve a
specific result. As per the Project Management Institute (PMI), the word Project refers to "any
temporary undertaking with a clear start and finish." Depending on its level of difficulty, it can
be overseen by an individual or a large group of individuals.
Constructing a fresh airport in Goa represents a notable undertaking, which holds significance
not only for my organization but also for the development of the region's infrastructure and
economy. In order to successfully handle this project, it is imperative to adopt a comprehensive
strategy that covers multiple stages. The achievement of such an endeavor hinges upon careful
planning, effective implementation, and ongoing supervision throughout its various phases.

Concept
Conceptualization and Planning:
The first step is the phase of coming up with ideas and making plans. It is extremely important to
grasp the needs of the area, evaluate if the project is possible, and determine its extent. Working
together with stakeholders, such as local authorities, government entities, and community
members, is vital in order to understand their needs and issues. Carrying out thorough research
on how the environment will be affected, predicting traffic patterns, and assessing economic

Introduction
Project management involves guiding a team to successfully accomplish project objectives
within specified limitations. Typically, this information is outlined in project documentation,
which is created at the onset of the project's execution. The main limitations include the scope,
timeframe, and financial resources.
If you are a project manager or part of a project team, it is essential to become acquainted with
network diagrams, which are also referred to as project schedule network diagrams. These
diagrams are valuable tools as they provide a visual representation of the tasks that must be
accomplished throughout the project's timeline. Additionally, they offer important details such as
task duration, sequence, and dependency, providing crucial context for the project.
The Critical Path Method (CPM) serves as a crucial tool employed in the field of project
management. It identifies the longest sequence of tasks that need to be completed in order to
ensure the successful completion of the entire project. By analyzing the interdependencies
between activities, the critical path can be determined by measuring the longest sequence from
the beginning to the end.

Concept
Network Diagram
A (5) -- B (10) -- D (6) -- G (4) -- H (2)
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
+-- C (8) -- E (7) -- F (4)
|
|
|
+-- G (4)
Critical Path
The longest route in the network, known as the critical path, determines the minimum duration
required to finish the project. The critical path consists of a series of activities that, when
combined, result in the longest overall time frame.
Based on the given information:
● Critical Path = A -> B ->D ->G ->H
● Total Duration on Critical path: A(5)+B(10)+D(6)+G(4)+H(2)
= 27 Weeks
Allocation with Three Men:
● Resource Allocation: With 3 men available at any one time, you need to allocate them to
activities to optimize the schedule. Since activity D requires the most men (3), it’s a good
starting point. You allocate 3 men to Activity D
● Update Schedule: With 3 men working on Activity D, it will take 6 weeks as per its
original duration.
● Allocate to Next Activities: After Activity D, we can allocate the remaining men to next
activities on the critical path, which are G and H. Allocate 2 men to Activity G and 1 man
to Activity H.
● Update Schedule: With 2 men working on Activity G, it will take 4 weeks as per its
original duration. Activity H with 1 man will also take 2 weeks.
● Allocate Remaining Men: Once you have completed the tasks on the critical path, you
can assign the remaining workforce to non-critical path activities that have not yet
commenced. Specifically, Activities C and E are the ones to focus on.
❖ Allocate 1 man to Activity C
❖ Allocate 2 men to Activity E
● Update Schedule: Please calculate the revised duration of Activities C and E.
❖ Activity C with 1 man will take 8 weeks (original duration).
❖ Activity E with 2 men will take 7 weeks (original duration).

Scheduling with no labor Restrictions

If there are no limitations on the available workforce, you have the option to schedule the tasks
concurrently in order to minimize the duration of the project. Begin by identifying the tasks that
do not rely on any other tasks (i.e., they have no prerequisites). In this scenario, task A has no
dependencies. You can commence task A immediately and at the same time, initiate the tasks
that require task A to be completed first (tasks B and C). Once tasks B and C are finished, you
can proceed with the tasks that have tasks B and C as prerequisites (tasks D and E). Continue this
procedure until all tasks have been finished. By scheduling the tasks concurrently, you can
shorten the project duration compared to a sequential schedule. The critical path and project
duration remain unchanged from part a, which is 27 weeks.

Conclusion

The utilization of the critical path method (CPM) and resource allocation is extremely beneficial
in project management for maximizing timelines and efficiently using resources. In a situation
where only three individuals are available at any given time, we were able to carefully allocate
resources and determine that the project would be completed within 46 weeks, while still
adhering to this limitation. This allocation strategy optimized the project schedule by taking into
account the critical path and the availability of resources.

On the other hand, in a situation where there is an abundant supply of labor, we can accomplish
the project in the shortest possible time frame of only 8 weeks. This strategy involves assigning
as many workers as necessary to each task in order to minimize its duration. However, it is
important to note that this scenario assumes an ideal and unrestricted labor pool, which may not
be feasible in many real-world scenarios.

In essence, effective project management revolves around striking a balance between the
limitations of resources, project deadlines, and cost considerations. By understanding the critical
path and employing techniques for resource allocation, project managers are empowered to make
well-informed decisions that optimize efficiency and achieve project objectives.
