Q1. Express each of the following ratios in simplest form.
(a) 40 cm : 1 m
∴ 40 : 100 (1 m = 100 cm.)
∴ 40÷20 : 100÷20
= 2 : 5.
Answer: 2 : 5
(b) 35 minutes : 3 hours
∴ 35 : 180 ( 3 hours = 3×60 = 180 minutes)
∴ 35÷5 : 180÷5
= 7 : 36.
Answer: 7 : 36
(c) 1¾ : 2½ : 3½
1¾=7/4, 2½=5/2, 3½=7/2.
LCM of denominators 4, 2, 2 is 4
∴ (7/4)×4 = 7, (5/2)×4 = 10, (7/2)×4 = 14
∴1¾ : 2½ : 3½ = 7 : 10 : 14
Answer: 7 : 10 : 14
(d) 125 ml : 2 L
125 : 2000 (2 L =2x1000 = 2000 ml.)
∴ 125÷125 : 2000÷125
= 1 : 16.
Answer: 1 : 16
Q2. Divide ₹1050 in the ratio 7 : 8.
Total parts = 7 + 8 = 15.
∴ Value of one part = Total ÷ Total parts = 1050 ÷ 15 = 70.
1st Share = 7×70 = ₹490
2nd Share = 8×70 = ₹560
Answer: ₹490 and ₹560
Q3. Find the ratio of the cost of a mobile (₹18000) to a laptop (₹42000) in
simplest form.
The ratio is 18000 : 42000.
∴ 18000÷6000 : 42000÷6000
= 3 : 7.
Answer: 3 : 7
Q4. The angles of a triangle are in the ratio 3 : 4 : 5. Find the angles.
Sum of angles in a triangle = 180°.
Sum of ratio parts = 3 + 4 + 5 = 12 parts.
Each part = 180° ÷ 12 = 15°.
∴measure of 1st angle = 3×15°= 45°,
measure of 2nd angle = 4×15°= 60°,
measure of 3rd angle= 5×15°= 75°
Answer: 45°, 60°, 75°
Q5. Three players scored 250 runs in the ratio 2 : 3 : 5. Find each score.
Total parts = 2 + 3 + 5 = 10.
One part = 250 ÷ 10 = 25.
Score of 1st player = 2×25 = 50 runs
Score of 2nd player = 3×25 = 75 runs
Score of 3rd player = 5×25 = 125 runs
Answer: 50 runs, 75 runs, 125 runs
Q6. Determine whether the following are in proportion (a:b = c:d).
(a) 23, 46, 26, 13
Product of extremes = 23 x 13 = 299
Product of means = 46 x 26 = 1196
Since product of extremes ≠ product of means, they are NOT in proportion.
Answer:23,46,26,13 are Not in proportion
(b) 40, 48, 160, 192
Product of extremes = 40 x 192 = 7680
Product of means = 48 x 160 = 7680
Since product of extremes = product of means, they are in proportion.
Answer: 40,48,160,192 are in proportion
Q7. Find the fourth proportional. (Given a, b, c → find x such that a:b = c:x)
(a) 5.4, 1.8, 0.6
Let the fourth proportional be x
Product of extremes = Product of means
∴ 5.4 X x = 1.8 X 0.6
1.8𝑋0.6
∴x=
5.4
∴ x = 0.2
Answer: The fourth proportional is 0.2
(b) 48, 12, 64
Let the fourth proportional be x
Product of extremes = Product of means
∴ 48 X x = 12 X 64
12𝑋64
∴x=
48
∴ x = 16
Answer: The fourth proportional is 16.
Q8. Find the third proportional. (Given a, b → find x such that a:b = b:x)
(a) 6, 12
Let the third proportional be x
Product of extremes = Product of means
∴ 6x = 12 x 12
12𝑋12
∴x=
6
∴ x = 24
Answer: The third proportional is 24.
(b) 1/4, 1/6
Let the third proportional be x
Product of extremes = Product of means
1 1 1
∴4 x=6x6
1𝑋4
∴x=
36
1
∴x=9
Answer: The third proportional is 1/9
Q9. Show that 25, 10, 4 are in continued proportion.
Numbers a, b, c are in continued proportion if b2 = a x c.
b2 = 102 = 100
a x c = 25 x 4 = 100
Since, b2 = a x c, they are in continued proportion.
Answer: Yes, 25,10,4 are in continued proportion.
Q10. A pole casts a 12 m shadow; a 3 m tree casts a 4.5 m shadow at the same time. Find the
height of the pole.
Let the height of the pole be x,
At the same time, height of the object and length of the shadow are in proportion.
∴ x:12::3:4.5
12 ×3
∴x= 4.5
∴x=8
Answer: The height of the pole is 8 m.
Q11. If 8 calculators cost ₹1960, what will 13 calculators cost?
This is an example of direct variation,
∴ ratios are equal,
𝑥 1960
∴ =
13 8
1960 ×13
∴x=
8
∴ x = 245 x 13
∴ x = ₹ 3185
Answer: The cost of 13 calculators will be ₹ 3185.
Q12. If 135 kg of corn feeds 45 horses for 8 days, how long will it feed 24
horses?
This is an example of inverse variation,
∴ products are equal,
∴ x × 24 = 8 × 45
8 × 45
∴x= 24
∴ x = 15 days
Answer: 135 Kg of corn will feed 24 horses for 15 days.
Q13. A watch gains 42 sec in 3 days 8 hours. How long will it take to gain 2 min
6 s?
Gains 42 sec in 3 days 8 hours = 3×24 + 8 = 80 hours.
Required gain = 2 min 6 s = 126 seconds.
This is an example of direct variation
∴ ratios are equal
𝑥 80
∴ =
126 42
126 × 80
∴x=
42
∴ x = 240 hours = 10 days.
Answer: It will take 10 days to gain 2 min 6 sec.
Q14. At 60 km/h it takes 4 hours to cover a distance. What speed is needed to
finish in 3 hours?
This is an example of inverse variation,
∴ products are equal
∴ x × 3 = 60 × 4
60 × 4
∴x= 3
∴ x = 80 Km/h
Answer: The required speed is 80 km/h.
Q15. 4 men can do a piece of work in 5 days. How many men will do the same
work in 4 days?
This is an example of inverse variation,
∴ products will be equal
∴x×4=4×5
4 ×5
∴x= 4
∴ x = 5 men
Answer: 5 men will do the same work in 4 days.
