TUTORIAL 4

Question 1
A separately excited DC motor runs at 1045 rpm with a constant field current while taking an
armature current of 50 A at 120 V. The armature resistance is 0.1 Ω. If the load on the motor
changes such that it now takes 95 A at 120 V, determine the motor speed at this load.

Question 2
A self-excited series DC motor which is connected to a 240 V supply has an armature resistance
of 0.2 Ω and a series field resistance of 0.3 Ω. When a particular load is connected, it runs at 1440
rpm when drawing 15 A from the supply.
(a) Determine the armature inducted voltage.
(b) Calculate the speed of the motor when the load is changed such that the current is increased
to 30 A. Assume that this causes a doubling of the flux.

Question 3
A 320 V self-excited shunt DC motor takes a total current of 80 A and runs at 1000 rpm. If the iron,
friction and windage losses amount to 1.5 kW, the shunt field resistance is 40 Ω and the armature
resistance is 0.2 Ω, determine the overall efficiency of the motor.

Question 4
The armature supply voltage of a separately excited DC motor is 230 V. The armature current is
12 A, the armature resistance is 0.8 Ω and the angular speed is 100 rad/s. Calculate:
(a) the armature induced voltage
(b) the electromagnetic torque
(c) the input power to the armature
(d) the mechanical power developed by the armature
(e) the armature copper loss.
Question 5

Figure Q5
The machine having the magnetization curve shown in Figure Q5 is operating as a separately
excited motor at a speed of 1500 rpm with a developed power of 10 hp and IF = 2.5 A. The armature
resistance is 0.3 Ω and the field resistance is RF = 50 Ω. Find the field voltage VF applied to the
field circuit, the developed torque, the armature current IA, and the voltage VT applied to the
armature circuit.

Question 6
A series-connected DC motor runs at N1 = 1200 rpm while driving a load that demands a torque
of 12 Nm. Neglect the resistances, rotational loss, and saturation effects. Find the power output.
Then, find the new speed and output power if the load torque reduces to 6 Nm.

Question 7
A separately excited DC motor which is connected to a 240 V supply has an armature resistance
of 0.5 Ω with the armature current of 15A. Suppose the developed torque is 30 Nm,
(a) Determine the armature inducted voltage.
(b) Calculate the speed of the motor.
