Module 1: Introduction to Political Science

Definition:

Political science is the study of government, politics, and power. It helps us understand how
decisions are made, how leaders govern, and how citizens influence society.

Key Concepts:

1. Politics: Making decisions for society.

- Example: Deciding on school fees or road construction in Jinja.

2. Government: Organization with authority to make and enforce laws.

- Example: Uganda government managing health, education, and security.

3. State: Political unit with territory, population, government, and sovereignty.

- Example: Uganda's borders, citizens, government, and independence.

4. Power: Ability to influence or control decisions.

- Example: The President signing laws.

5. Authority: Legitimate power.

- Example: Police enforcing traffic rules.

6. Sovereignty: State's independence.

- Example: Uganda making its own laws without interference.

Importance of Political Science:

- Helps citizens understand government decisions.

- Explains how laws are made and enforced.

- Encourages active participation in politics.

- Prepares future leaders and policymakers.

- Helps predict and solve societal conflicts.

Types of Political Systems:

Democracy: People choose leaders. Example: Uganda, USA


Dictatorship: One person rules with absolute power. Example: North Korea

Monarchy: Rule by king or queen. Example: UK (symbolic), Saudi Arabia (absolute)

Oligarchy: Rule by a small group of people. Example: Historical examples

Role of Citizens:

- Vote in elections.

- Follow laws.

- Participate in community decisions.

- Hold leaders accountable.
