Sub t it le Economics of Poverty and Inequality
C ours e Out line This course provides an analytical overview of what constitutes key dimensions of economics of development in today’s world.. This cour
se focuses on the economics of poverty and inequality, while other dimensions of economic development will be taken up as case studies.
Other issues (growth, migration, international trade and finance) are examined from poverty and inequality perspectives, so the treatment
of these will be different from standard theory as students can learn in other relevant courses (in particular, macroeconomics for growth t
heory and international economics for trade and finance theory). While the analytical focus remains rigorous, the course will pay due respe
cts to non-mainstream or non-economic approaches for development through reading assignments. The nature of the course is lecture-b
ased, however, students are strongly encouraged to participate in the class discussion.
Ob jec t iv es This course is targeted to students who wish to pursue an international career in multinational corporations and international organization
s and/or wish to have a good preparation for advanced studies in international development at the internationally reputed graduate progr
ams. No prior exposure to economics is assumed, but students without prior exposure to introductory level economics shall be prepared t
o work harder towards the completion of the course.
b efore/ a ft er c ou rs e Students are required to purchase a textbook and read assigned pages before and after each session. Spend 60 min for preparation and 1
of s t u d y 20 min for review including assignments.
