Syllabus: Physics of Wind Power: History of wind power, Indian and Global statistics, Wind physics,
Betz limit, Tip speed ratio, stall and pitch control. Wind speed statistics-probability distributions, Wind
speed and power-cumulative distribution functions. Wind generator topologies: Review of modern wind
turbine technologies, Fixed and Variable speed wind turbines, Induction Generators, Doubly-Fed
Induction Generators and their characteristics, Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Generators.

1) Explain and Draw block diagram of wind energy conversion system? Write the advantages and
disadvantages of wind energy conversion system? Write application of wind energy conversion system
(WECS)?

2) Describe the different schemes for wind electric generation or Describe the generating system.

3) Write a note on the classification of electrical generators for small, medium and large wind power ratings?

4) What are the advantages of vertical axis wind turbine over horizontal axis type?

5) Define torque coefficient and Betz limit?

6) Describe the working principle of a Double fed induction generator which is used in wind Energy power
plant for Electricity generation. Also Show the Block Diagram.

7) Discuss briefly the site selection considerations for establishing a wind energy power plant.

NUMERICALS

1) Calculate the change in wind power when the wind speed changes from 15 km/hr to 45 km/hr. The area of
the wind turbine blade is 60m2 and the density of air is 1.2kg/m3

2) Find wind at 1 bar and 20°C temperature has a velocity of 12 m/s. The turbine has a diameter of 60 m and its
operating speed is 50 rpm at maximum efficiency. Calculate:
(i) the total power density in the wind stream,

(ii) the maximum obtainable power density,

(iii) Reasonable obtained power density,

(iv) the torque and axial thrust.

3) Explain the power in the wind if the wind speed is 20 m/s and blade length is 50 m.
4) Wind at one standard atmospheric pressure and 15°c has a speed of 10 m/s. a 10-m diameter wind turbine is
operating at 5 rpm with maximum efficiency of 40%. the actual power density in wind stream in w/m^2 is?
5) Wind at 1 standard atmospheric pressure and 15oC temperature has a velocity of 10 m/s. The turbine has a
diameter of 120 m and its operating speed is 40 rpm at maximum efficiency. Calculate:
(a) the total power density in the wind stream,
(b) the maximum obtainable power density assuming η=40%,
(c) the total power produced (in W),
(d) the torque and axial thrust.
