Solutions - Assignment 3

1) An infinite straight wire carries a current I is placed to the left of a rectangular
loop of wire with width w and length l, as shown in the figure below:

a) Determine the magnetic flux through the rectangular loop due to the current I . (5
points)

b) Suppose that the current is a function of time t with I(t) = a + btwhere aand
bare positive constants. What is the induced emf in the loop and the direction of
the induced current? (5 points)

2) a) A solar thermal collector has a single cover of low iron glass (n = 1.526).
During a particular hour in the day the angle of incidence of beam radiation from
the sun on the surface of the cover is 600 . The extinction coefficient of the glass is
32 m−1 and its thickness 2.3 mm. Calculate the transmittance, reflectance and
absorptance of this glass cover. (5 points)

b) Solar thermal collectors usually have multiple covers as shown in the figure
below:

The expressions for transmittance of multiple covers are similar to that for one cover
with a tiny modification:
1 1 − R⊥ 1 − R∣∣
T N layers = ( + )

2 1 + (2N − 1)R⊥ 1 + (2N − 1)R∣∣

N here is the number of covers. The other notations are same as you used for a
single cover. Use this expression to calculate transmittance, reflectance and
absorptance of two glass covers.
(Hint: Will τa change compared to what you solved for in part a ?)

(3 points)

c) The irradiation of the Sun's radiation on a surface oriented normal to the rays is
1388 W /m−2 . If the collector was placed flat on the ground (as shown in the
figure above) the sun's beam radiation would have made angle 600 to the normal.
What would be the irradiation on the glass plate of the collector if the solar collector
was titled by an angle 150 from the ground ?
(2 points)

Solutions:
I have written down the steps in Mathematica. They are self explanatory.

c) Depends on which way the plate is turned

The angle between sun beam and the normal to the plate can either be 60 - 15 or
60+15 as shown below:

Thus we will get either 1388 cos(45) = 981.46W/m2 or 1388 cos(75) =

359.24W/m2

a) Find the change in the reflectance (in %) of a glass surface (n = 1.5) in air for
near-normal incident light when an anti-reflection coating of MgF2 (n = 1.38)
optimized for 550 nm light is applied on top of it. (5 points)
b) What would be the thickness of the MgF2 coating you have to deposit on the
glass?

(3 points)
c) Explain qualitatively the effectiveness of the anti-reflection coating for light
incident at other wavelengths of the solar spectrum (2 points)
