ARGUMENT ESSAY
MIDTERM

INSTRUCTIONS: Read the arguments. Write a counterargument for each.

Young people will learn from their mistakes, so they

should be allowed to make them.

If no one stands up to bullies, they will continue behaving badly.

There are some things that should be available to
everyone, and water is one of them.

Courses in art and music help support other kinds of learning,

as well as personal development.
Taking a gap year may not be the right decision for everyone, but for many
students, it offers personal, academic, and professional benefits.

The year away from studying can help students make decisions about their future.

If students take a break from their studies, it increases the chance that they
will never go to college.

Educational research refutes the argument that those who do not attend
college directly after high school do not continue with their education.
For many students, however, the gap year is the perfect
break that encourages personal growth, leaving them better
prepared for college and their future careers.
• Write an essay to argue for OR against the following
statement: “People should be allowed to bring their pets
into stores and restaurants.”

• Be sure to include an argument, a counterargument,

and a refutation. Write at least 250 words.
1. Background statement
Intro
2. Your opinion: Agree that public spaces should allow pets to enter

Point 1: Pets are beneficial to their owners’ well-being

Para 1 - Reduce stress and loneliness
- A health survey
Point 2: Pets help create a friendlier environment
Para 2 - People are more willing to talk and connect
- Ex: Pet-friendly café in some countries

One opposing argument: Pets cause hygience and safety problems ->
Para 3
These problems can be alleviated by clear rules + hygience standards

1. To conclude, although (one side of the question),

Conclusion 2. Advocate the policy of allowing pets into stores and restaurants
3. Final thought: Prediction
In recent years, people’s attitudes towards pets have greatly changed. What was once seen as simply owning an animal is
now more likely to be regarded as having a family member. Some people even suggest that the government should allow
pets to enter public places such as stores and restaurants. Personally, I would side with this opinion.

The first and most important reason is that pets are beneficial to their owners’ well-being. It is well known that keeping
pets can reduce stress and loneliness, which are common problems in modern society. According to several health surveys,
people with pets report lower levels of anxiety and higher satisfaction in daily life. Allowing pets in stores and restaurants
would make it easier for owners to spend more time with their pets and to maintain both their physical and emotional
health.

Pets also help build a friendlier environment for everyone. Many studies confirm that animals, especially dogs, encourage
social interaction among strangers. When pets are present, people are more willing to talk and connect. In fact, pet-friendly
cafés and shops in many countries show that customers enjoy the warm and welcoming atmosphere that animals create.
Therefore, to some extent, banning pets from public places limits social connection and community spirit.

Opponents of the idea claim that allowing pets indoors may cause hygiene and safety problems. This may be partly true.
However, it is the most short-sighted argument one could imagine. While it is possible that some pets may misbehave or
cause allergies, these problems can be prevented by clear rules, such as requiring leashes, carriers, or designated pet-
friendly areas. In addition, many restaurants already deal with greater hygiene challenges, and these can be managed with
proper standards.

In conclusion, I advocate the policy of allowing pets into stores and restaurants. If all businesses make reasonable
adjustments, our public spaces will be much more inclusive and enjoyable for both people and their pets.
