Authority represents the right and power of an individual to order and command his

subordinates, to take various decisions in the workplace. authority flows from top
to bottom.

Authority is restricted by different rules and regulations in organization.

According to Henry Fayol:-


" authority is the right to give orders and power to extract obedience"

According to Simon:-
" Authority may be defined as the power to make decisions which guides the action
of another. It is the relationship between two individuals
1 superior.
2 subordinate.
the superior frames and transmit decisions with an expansion that they will be
accepted by the subordinates. The subordinates expect such decisions and his
conduct is determined by them."

Features of authority.
1 Authority is basically provided along with responsibility.

2 It is a right to command and control others, it flow from superior to subordinate


and can be dedicated by your manager to his subordinates.

3 It is used to achieve organizational objective.

4 The scope is limited up to the extent of the work assigned.

5 Authorities given by individually working at different position and post in an


organization reflect through scalar change principle.

Meaning of responsibility

Responsibility refers to the task or job assigned and its effective completion in
favor Of an individual in an organization. It is regarded as an obligation of
employees in an organization to complete the task effectively. Responsibilities
flow upward in an concerned Ranging from subordinate to superior. An individual
should be given authority along with responsibility.

Definition of responsibility

According to Henry Fayol


" Responsibility is a collaborative authority it is natural consciousness and
essential counter part and Where so ever authority is excise responsibility
arrives."

According to M.C Farland

" Responsibility can be defined as The duties and activities assigned to a position
or an executive."

Features of responsibility

1 It is an obligation of an employee to complete the work assigned.

2 It cannot be dedicated to an individual.

3 It comes into existence from the process of delegation of authority.


4 It flows from upward, from subordinate to down superior.

Meaning of accountability

In an organization authority is dedicated to workers Along with equal amount of


responsibility. it is their obligation towards business to perform their work as
specified and submit the performance report to the superior it is termed as
accountability. Accountability cannot be dedicated. It also moves upward i.e. From
the subordinate to the superior.

Definition of accountability

according to Edwin B. Flippo


" Accountability is the requirement of an answerable for once performance."

Features of accountability

1 It showed the answerable approach of a subordinate to superior for the final


result.

2 It cannot be dedicated or transferred.

3 It concentrates on accomplishment of the work assigned to the workers.

4 It flow in the Upward direction i.e. Subordinate will be held accountable for his
work to the superior.
