Understanding Population Regression Functions

This document presents exercises on population regression and data analysis. It explains that the population regression function predicts the expected value of a dependent variable based on the value of an independent variable. It includes graphs and data tables on household expenditures, SAT scores, and income, and analyzes the relationships between the variables. It concludes that academic results are related to household income, and that scores tend to be similar between men and women.

EXERCISES CHAPTER II.

2.1 What is the conditional expectation function or population regression function?

The condition:
E(Y/Xi= f (XiEquation 2.1.1
It is known as Conditional Expectation Function, Population Regression Function.
(FRP) or Population Regression (RP). We can assume that the FRP E(Y/X) is a function
linear of Xi, of the type:

E (Y/Xi) =β1+ β2XiEquation 2.1.2

This equation is known as the population regression function. Through this
function, the values of the linear relationship between the variable can be known
dependent or returned and the explanatory variable.

Xi Independent Variable

2.15. In table 2.8, data on food expenditure and total expenditure is provided (in
rupees) for a sample of 55 rural families in India. (In the early 2000s, one dollar
American was equivalent to almost 40 Indian blondes.
a) Plot the data with the vertical axis for food spending and the horizontal axis for the
gasto total; trace una línea de regresión a través de los puntos de dispersión.

b) What general conclusions can be drawn from this example?

In the obtained graph, it can be observed that there is a direct relationship between the cats in
total food with the cats, since the greater the total expense, the expense on food
increase.
Table 2.9 represents data on the average exam scores.
academic aptitude SAT of students who applied for undergraduate admission in 1972
2007. These data represent the scores in the critical reading exam and
mathematics of men and women. The writing category was introduced in 2006. By
thus, this data is not included.
a) With the horizontal axis for the years and the vertical for the SAT exam scores,
Graph the critical reading and mathematics scores of men and women by

b) What general conclusions are drawn?
Taking into account the presented graphs, it can be seen that regarding reading
criticism and mathematics, men and women tend to be equal, although there are certain
points that disperse more, in general terms, can be concluded to be the same.
C) Knowing the critical reading scores of men and women, how would you go about
predict the math grades?
With simple regression models of critical reading with mathematics, with the
scores in both sexes.
D) Graph the math grades of women against the grades of
mathematics of men. What do you observe?
Graph Men and Women mathematics

Looking at the represented graph, it can be concluded that there is not much difference between
men and women in mathematics.
2.17. Table 2.10 presents data on the reasoning exam scores
SAT classified by income for three types of tests: critical reading, mathematics and
drafting. In example 2.2, figure 2.7 was presented, which contains a graph of the
average of math grades based on average family income.
A) refer to figure 2.7 and prepare a similar graph that relates the average of
ratings in critical reading with the average family income. Compare your results.
with those in figure 2.7.

A) consult figure 2.7 and prepare a similar graph that relates the average of
critical reading scores with average family income. Compare their results
with those in figure 2.7.

b) Repeat section a) to relate the average writing grades with the

average family income, and compare your results with those of the other two graphs.
It can be seen that the behavior of the variables is the same as in the graphs.
previous.

c) Examine the three graphs and mention what general conclusion can be drawn.
Analyzing the graphs we can determine that the academic preparation that
the residents will be reflected in the economy, it can be seen that, with
greater study of the subjects of writing, literature, and mathematics, the income will go
increasing and this leads to a better standard of living in society.
