CARING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT WE LIVE IN

How can we take care of the environment we live in?

In this unit we will learn about the main forests of our country and the causes and
the consequences of its deforestation. Furthermore, we will study the
characteristics of the urban environment.

Brazil is a vast country and has the most different types of climate, soil, and topography.
animals and plants. It has the vast Amazon Rainforest and other places where the
nature prevails, like the Pantanal and the Atlantic Forest.
The Amazon rainforest is a forest
closed. Inside it are thousands of
vegetation and animals. Some companies
they settled in the Amazon region to
to illegally exploit hardwood timber,
like mahogany, contributing to the
deforestation.

The Pantanal is the largest flooded area in

world. It contains many
species of animals, such as capybara,
turtle, anacondas, maned wolves, fish,
a multitude of birds, such as the jabiru,
symbol of the Pantanal, and thousands of
caimans. This region has been
deforested, and the main factors
deforestation is the expansion
from agriculture and the exploitation of
coal by large producers, who
we cut wood from large areas.

The Atlantic Forest is considered the area that

concentrates the highest biological diversity of
planet. It is also the most threatening due to
human occupation. Deforestation was so
greater than five years an area
equivalent to a football field was
slashed per minute. Even reduced and
fragmented, it is still of great importance
environmental. It ensures the fertility of
alone, controls the climate and protects the slopes
the mountains. It still shelters many species
vegetables and animals, especially insects.

Respond in the notebook.

1-Observe again the texts that accompany the photos on the previous page and
write the word that appears in bold.

2-What does this word mean to you?

Do you know where the Amazon Rainforest is? Locate it on the map.

1-Read the poster next to you. Discuss the ideas

presents in it. Then write in the notebook. And what about it?
a sentence about preservation. Then, illustrate The devastation of
this idea. Amazonia no
do not interfere with anything

in my life.

The story of the devastation of our

forests is very old. It started with the
arrival of the colonizers to our
country.
The first tree that practically
what disappeared was the brazilwood.
For a long time, tons of these
trees were removed and taken to
countries of Europe. From brazilwood
they extracted dyes for fabrics, for
ink cartridges and for other purposes. Today is a
almost extinct tree.

The brazilwood was a native tree of the Forest

Atlantic.
Today, there are few of this species. On the 3rd of
May is celebrated as the Day of the Brazilwood.
