Course Title: SWCC 1 – Philippine Social Realities and Social Welfare

Course Description:
This course provides an overview of the Philippine social realities that affect human welfare and
development. It focuses on the study of poverty, inequality, social injustice, and other societal
issues that shape the country’s socio-economic, political, and cultural landscape. Emphasis is
given to understanding how these realities influence the delivery of social welfare programs and
the practice of social work in the Philippines. The course also examines the roles of government
and non-government organizations in addressing these challenges.

Course Objectives:
At the end of the course, the students are expected to:
1. Analyze the historical and structural roots of social problems and inequalities in the
Philippines.

Course Description:

This course explores the social environment as the context of human behavior and social
functioning. It focuses on the family, group, community, and organization as primary social
systems where individuals interact, develop roles, and experience problems. The course analyzes
the structures, functions, and dynamics of these systems and their interrelationships. Emphasis is
given to understanding how social workers engage with these systems in promoting human well-
