STP SOP (Standard Operating Procedure)
1. Objective
To ensure safe, efficient, and continuous operation of the Sewage Treatment Plant in
compliance with environmental regulations.
2. Scope
This SOP applies to all STP operators, technicians, maintenance personnel, and authorized
supervisors involved in the operation and maintenance of the Sewage Treatment Plant.
3. Responsibilities
Operator
Operate all STP equipment as per procedure.
Record daily operational parameters.
Report abnormalities or breakdowns immediately.
Maintenance Team
Carry out preventive and corrective maintenance.
Inspect equipment periodically.
Safety Officer
Ensure compliance with safety guidelines and use of PPE.
Identify and control hazards associated with STP operations.
4. Required PPE
Safety Shoes
Helmet
Gloves
Safety Goggles
Face Mask / Respirator
Reflective Jacket
5. STP Process Steps
5.1 Pre-Start Checks
Ensure main power supply is available.
Check inlet sewage flow level.
Ensure valves are in correct operational position.
Verify blower oil level.
Check for leakages in pipelines.
Ensure all sensors and meters (DO, pH, TDS) are functional.
5.2 Start-Up Procedure
1. Switch ON the main control panel.
2. Start the Raw Sewage Feed Pump.
3. Start the Aeration Blower.
4. Check and maintain Dissolved Oxygen (DO) level at 2–4 mg/L.
5. Start Return Sludge Pump (if provided).
6. Check aeration tank for proper mixing.
5.3 Normal Operation
Maintain the following parameters:
pH: 6.5 – 8.5
DO: 2 – 4 mg/L in aeration tank
STP SOP (Standard Operating Procedure)
MLSS: 2000 – 3500 mg/L
Ensure proper sludge recirculation.
Monitor clarifier overflow for clarity.
Ensure chlorination dosing is consistent.
Monitor for odor formation and take corrective measures.
5.4 Sludge Management
Remove excess sludge as per requirement.
Dry sludge on drying beds or use mechanical dewatering.
Dispose sludge as per local government regulations.
5.5 Shutdown Procedure
Stop chemical dosing pumps.
Stop sludge handling pumps.
Stop the aeration blowers.
Stop raw sewage feed pump.
Switch OFF the main control panel.
6. Daily Records to Maintain
Inlet and outlet pH
DO levels
MLSS and MLVSS
Flow rate
Sludge volume index (SVI)
Chemical consumption
Electricity consumption
Daily logbook entries (start/stop times, abnormalities)
7. Safety Precautions
Do not enter confined spaces (tanks, chambers) without permit and gas test.
Prevent exposure to toxic gases (H₂S, CH₄, CO₂).
Always use proper PPE.
Ensure all electrical panels are properly grounded.
Follow LOTO (Lockout–Tagout) during maintenance work.
Keep walkways clean and dry.
Keep first-aid box and emergency contact numbers accessible.
8. Emergency Handling
Low DO Level
Increase blower speed or start an additional blower.
Check for diffuser clogging.
Overflow Condition
Reduce inlet flow.
Check for outlet blockage and rectification.
Odor Issues
Increase chlorination.
Increase aeration.
Check for stagnant sludge.
