Typology & Personality Assessment.
1. Personality
Personality refers to the unique set of characteristics, traits, behaviors, and patterns of thinking that
define an individual’s way of being in the world.
It encompasses various aspects of an individual’s psychological makeup, such as temperament,
values, beliefs, and emotions, and is shaped by a combination of genetic, environmental, and
cultural factors.
Personality influences how people perceive and interact with others and can impact their life
choices, relationships, and overall well-being. It can also change and develop over time through
experiences and personal growth
The 4 DISC Personality Types
DISC is an acronym that stands for the four main behavioral styles outlined in the DISC model of
personalities: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness. The DISC personality
profile, based on a theory first proposed in 1928 by physiological psychologist William Moulton
Marston, is a personality test that assesses how you work with others based on four personality
traits:
1. D – Dominance: Relates to control, power and assertiveness. A person who ranks highly in
dominance places emphasis on accomplishing results and is often confident, outspoken,
assertive and decisive.
2. I – Influence: Relates to social situations and communication. A person who ranks highly in
this quadrant is often skilled at influencing or persuading others and tends to be optimistic,
open, enthusiastic, trusting and energetic.
3. S – Steadiness: Relates to patience, persistence and thoughtfulness. A person who ranks
highly in steadiness places emphasis on cooperation, sincerety and dependability and tends
to have calm, deliberate dispositions.
4. C – Conscientiousness: Relates to structure and organization. A person who ranks highly in
this quadrant places emphasis on quality and accuracy and tends to enjoy their
independence and be detail-oriented.
DISC profiles look at how you respond to certain situations, how to influence others and how you
respond to coworkers. Employers use DISC to assess teams, communication and potential
candidates. It’s important to note that no DISC style is “better” than any other, and we all often use
each of the four types in various situations. This personality assessment helps people to figure out
the style they tend to gravitate toward the most.
The DISC model is based on two foundational observations about how people normally
behave:
i. Outgoing vs. reserved: This trait describes each person’s “internal motor” or pace. Some
people engage their motor quickly and others tend to engage their motor more slowly.
ii. Task-oriented vs. people-oriented: This trait describes individuals’ external focus that
guides them. Some people focus on getting things done, while others are more tuned into
the people around them
1. Maslow's Humanistic Theory of Personality
Maslow's humanistic theory of personality states that people achieve their full potential by
moving from basic needs to self-actualization. As a leader of humanistic psychology, Abraham
Maslow approached the study of personality by focusing on subjective experiences, free will,
and the innate drive toward self-actualization .
Maslow expanded the field of humanistic psychology to include an explanation of how human
needs change throughout an individual's lifespan, and how these needs influence the
development of personality.
Maslow's hierarchy of needs ranks human needs from the most basic physical needs to the most
advanced needs of self-actualization. A person must acquire and master each level of need
before proceeding to the next need.
Maslow studied the personalities of self-actualizers and found they had many things in
common; he believed self-actualizers indicate a coherent personality syndrome and represent
optimal psychological health and functioning.
2. Sigmund Freud Theory of Personality :
3. Jung Typology
Jung typology is a method of defining a person's psychological orientation. In 1912, Swiss
psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung theorized that behavior isn't random but rather the result of
how people receive and categorize information and then draw conclusions from it.
According to this theory, people are predisposed to either of two general attitude
types—extroversion (E) or introversion (I)—and they also fall under certain personality
patterns built around four main psychological functions, which everyone has and uses. These
functions are:
Sensing (S): The act of sensing is a function of perceiving, meaning that we receive
senses into consciousness rather than work to earn them. In Jung's typology,
sensing-type people tend to be practical or realistic thinkers because they base their
perceptions on what they can observe.
Intuiting (N): Intuiting is another function of perceiving, one that derives from the
unconscious. Intuiting types are the opposite of sensing types, as they base their
perceptions on abstract ideas that stem from a form of instinct.
Thinking (T): Thinking is a rational or judging function that involves connecting ideas.
Jung distinguished between active thinking, in which a person consciously directs their
thoughts, and inactive thinking, which is a passive form.
Feeling (F): Feeling is a rational or judging function that relates to evaluating people or
things with regard to their worth to us. This isn't the same as emotion, which Jung
termed "affect" and regarded as a non-rational, contaminating function.
