Demonstration Method

Meaning
The word demonstration means to give demos or to perform the particular activity or concept. In
the demonstration method, the teaching-learning process is carried in a systematic way.
Demonstration often occurs when students have a hard time connecting theories to actual
practice or when students are unable to understand applications of theories.
A method demonstration is a teaching method used to communicate an idea with the aid
of visuals such as flip charts, posters, power point, etc.

In order to make a successful demonstration method, three things are necessary.

(a) The object being displayed during the demonstration should not be so small.
(b) During the demonstration, the clear language should be used so that pupils may understand
concepts easily.
(c) The pupils should be able to question teachers in order to remove their difficulties.

● Things to take into account

Preparation of a classroom demonstration.
1. Plan a demonstration that will create interest among students.
2. Select the unit which suits the age level and the method itself so the objectives of teaching
can be achieved.
3. Relate the task to be demonstrated.
4. Make sure that everybody can see and hear.
5. Prepare written handouts, materials etc. to be demonstrated.
6. Plan out some activity for the silent period coming during the demonstration.

Performing a classroom demonstration.

1. Communicate properly while demonstrating.
2. Involve the students in the task so that they don't get reduced to passive listeners.
3. Keep the demonstration simple, precise and sequential.
4. Do not digress from the main theme of the content.
5. Give proper instructions to the students about what they have to observe and what they have
to note down.
6. Don't be in haste during the demonstration.
7. Do not drag the demonstration too much.
8. Make sure that the generalisation comes out from the students.
9. Summarize as the demonstration follows.
10. Distribute handouts in the end.
After performing the classroom demonstration :
1. A small discussion is mandatory regarding the demonstration done.
2. Allow the students to ask questions if any.
3. Be patient in dealing with the doubts that arise.

Steps of Demonstration method

(1) Planning and preparation

Proper planning is required for a good demonstration. For this the following points should be
kept in mind.
● Proper the preparation of subject matter.
● lesson planning
● collection of material related to the demonstration.
● rehearsal of demonstration.

(2) Introducing the lesson

The teacher should introduce the lesson to students keeping in mind the following things.
● individual differences
● Environment Experiences
The lesson can also be started with some simple and interesting experiments, very common
events or some internal story.

(3) Presentation of subject matter

– In demonstration, presentation of subject matter is very important.
– The principle of reflecting thinking should be kept in mind.
– The teacher should teach the student in such a way that their previous knowledge can be
attached to their new knowledge.

4) Demonstration
-The performance in the demonstration table should be ideal for the student.-The demonstration
should be neat and clean.

(5) Teaching Aids-The teacher can use various teaching aids like models, blackboard, graphs
[Link] demonstration.

(6) Evaluation
-In this last step, evaluation of the whole demonstration should be done, so that it can be made
more effective.

● Merits of demonstration method

(1) It helps a student in having a deeper understanding of the topic.

(2) It helps students remain active in the teaching -learning process.
(3) It leads to permanent learning.
(4) It accounts for the principles of reflective thinking.
(5) It helps to create interest for topics among students.
(6) It helps in arousing the spirit of discovery among students.
(7) It imparts maximum learning to students.

● Demerits
(1) Students can not benefit from direct and personal experiences as teachers carry out the
demonstration.
(2) It can be costly as it requires costly materials.
(3) It can be a time-consuming method.
(4) It is not based on learning by doing.
(5) This method does not provide training for the scientific method.
(6) There is a lack of experienced teachers to carry out the demonstration.

● Components
1. Clear objectives
2. Appropriate topic, concepts ideas and teaching points
3. Adequacy of manipulative skill
4. The sequence of presentation
5. Creation of appropriate situation
6. Generalization
7. Students participation
8. Blackboard usage

The demonstration method facilitates reflective thinking by encouraging students to connect new information with their existing knowledge. It prompts students to think deeply about the subject matter and align it with their prior experiences, which leads to enhanced understanding and retention .

Student participation in a demonstration session positively impacts learning outcomes by ensuring that students remain active and engaged. Active participation allows them to question and interact with the material, promoting a better understanding and retention of the demonstrated concepts .

Effective planning and preparation for a classroom demonstration involve several steps: thorough preparation of the subject matter, detailed lesson planning, collection of related materials, and rehearsal of the demonstration. These elements ensure that the teacher is well-prepared to convey the lesson clearly and engagingly .

Teaching aids, such as models, blackboards, and graphs, enhance the effectiveness of the demonstration method by providing tangible tools that help clarify abstract or complex concepts. These aids support visually and kinesthetically oriented learners, making the demonstration more accessible and comprehensive .

The demonstration method stimulates interest and discovery by presenting ideas in a visually engaging manner, which can intrigue students and encourage them to explore topics further. It also fosters a learning environment that prompts students to question and investigate, thereby sparking a spirit of discovery and curiosity .

The demonstration method aligns with permanent learning principles by actively engaging students in the learning process, which strengthens memory retention. The method also invokes emotional and cognitive connections through visual and practical examples, thus embedding the learned concepts more permanently in students' memories .

Patience is crucial for teachers during a demonstration as it creates an open and supportive learning environment. When teachers patiently address student questions, it encourages a culture of inquiry and deeper understanding, helping to clarify uncertainties and reinforce learning .

The success of the demonstration method relies on three key elements: a suitable size for the object being demonstrated so all students can observe effectively, clear and comprehensible language to facilitate understanding, and an environment where students feel comfortable questioning the teacher to resolve any difficulties .

The main challenges in implementing the demonstration method include the high costs associated with procuring necessary materials, time consumption, lack of personal, experiential learning opportunities for students, insufficient emphasis on learning by doing, absence of training for scientific methods, and the scarcity of seasoned educators capable of executing effective demonstrations .

The advantages of the demonstration method include fostering a deeper understanding of topics, sustaining student engagement, promoting permanent learning, encouraging reflective thinking, creating interest in subjects, inspiring a spirit of discovery, and optimizing learning outcomes .
