**Drug Classification:** Ergot alkaloid; uterotonic

**Route of Administration:** Oral, intramuscular (IM), intravenous (IV)

**Mechanism of Action:** Stimulates uterine smooth muscle, increasing tone and frequency
of contractions, reducing bleeding postpartum.

**Indications and Contraindications:** Indicated for prevention and control of postpartum

hemorrhage.
Contraindicated in patients with hypertension, preeclampsia, eclampsia, and
hypersensitivity to ergot alkaloids.

**Side Effects and Adverse Effects:** Hypertension, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness,
abdominal cramps.

**Nursing Responsibilities:** Monitor blood pressure and uterine response closely. Assess
for signs of excessive bleeding. Educate the patient on potential side effects.
Mefenamic Acid (Ponstan)
**Drug Classification:** Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug (NSAID)

**Route of Administration:** Oral

**Mechanism of Action:** Inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, leading to

decreased synthesis of prostaglandins responsible for pain and inflammation.

**Indications and Contraindications:** Used for mild to moderate pain, including menstrual
cramps.
Contraindicated in patients with peptic ulcer disease, renal impairment, or NSAID allergy.

**Side Effects and Adverse Effects:** Nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, diarrhea, headache,
dizziness.

**Nursing Responsibilities:** Administer with food to reduce GI upset. Monitor renal

function and signs of GI bleeding.
Metronidazole (Flagyl)
**Drug Classification:** Nitroimidazole antibiotic/antiprotozoal

**Route of Administration:** Oral, intravenous (IV), topical, vaginal

**Mechanism of Action:** Disrupts DNA synthesis in anaerobic bacteria and protozoa,

leading to cell death.

**Indications and Contraindications:** Effective against bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis,

anaerobic infections.
Contraindicated in first trimester of pregnancy, alcohol use during therapy,
hypersensitivity.

**Side Effects and Adverse Effects:** Nausea, metallic taste, headache, dizziness, diarrhea,
dark urine.

**Nursing Responsibilities:** Educate about avoiding alcohol (disulfiram-like reaction).

Monitor neurologic status. Ensure completion of full course.
Cefuroxime (Cefuroxam)
**Drug Classification:** Second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic

**Route of Administration:** Oral, intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM)

**Mechanism of Action:** Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and
death.

**Indications and Contraindications:** Used for respiratory tract infections, skin infections,
UTIs, and Lyme disease.
Contraindicated in patients with cephalosporin allergy.

**Side Effects and Adverse Effects:** Diarrhea, nausea, rash, headache, possible
superinfection.

**Nursing Responsibilities:** Monitor for allergic reactions. Advise taking with food. Assess
for superinfections like candidiasis.
Nutralac
**Drug Classification:** Nutritional supplement (likely multivitamin/mineral)

**Route of Administration:** Oral

**Mechanism of Action:** Provides essential vitamins and minerals needed for various
metabolic and developmental processes.

**Indications and Contraindications:** Used in vitamin and mineral deficiencies, often
