**Climate – Detailed Notes (Class 9 Geography)**

**1. Weather vs Climate**

- *Weather*: Day-to-day conditions of atmosphere (temperature, rainfall, humidity, winds).

- *Climate*: Average weather conditions of a place for a long period (usually 30+ years).

- India has a *monsoon type* climate.

**2. Factors Affecting India’s Climate**

1. **Latitude**

- Tropic of Cancer divides India into tropical (south) and subtropical (north) zones.

- Tropical areas → high temperatures; Subtropical → more seasonal variation.

2. **Altitude**

- Higher altitude → lower temperature.

- E.g., Shimla is cooler than Delhi though at same latitude.

3. **Pressure and Winds**

- India’s climate is influenced by:

- Pressure conditions over the Indian Ocean and Central Asia

- Jet streams

- Monsoon winds

4. **Distance from the Sea**

- Coastal areas (Mumbai, Chennai) have moderate climate.

- Interior areas (Delhi, Jaipur) have extreme climate.

5. **Relief Features**

- Himalayas block cold Central Asian winds.

- Also force moisture-laden winds to rise → rainfall.

6. **Ocean Currents**

- Warm and cold currents influence coastal temperatures.

**3. Indian Monsoon**

- India’s climate is dominated by monsoons.

- Monsoons: Seasonal reversal of winds.

- Two main branches of monsoon winds:

1. Arabian Sea Branch

2. Bay of Bengal Branch

- Onset: Around 1st June in Kerala.

- Retreat: Begins in September.

**4. Seasons in India**

India has four major seasons:

1. **The Cold Weather Season (Winter: December–February)**

- Cool, dry winds blow from land to sea.

- Clear skies, low humidity.

- Western disturbances bring winter rain in north India.

2. **The Hot Weather Season (Summer: March–May)**

- High temperatures; low pressure over northwest India.

- Heatwaves common.

- Local winds:

- *Loo* (hot, dry wind in north India)

- *Kalbaisakhi* (violent thunderstorms in Bengal)

- *Mango showers* (pre-monsoon rain in Karnataka)

3. **The Advancing Monsoon (Rainy Season: June–September)**

- Southwest monsoon brings 75% of India’s rainfall.

- Relief influences rainfall:

- Heavy rainfall on windward side of Western Ghats.

- Low rainfall in leeward side (rainshadow areas).

4. **The Retreating Monsoon (Autumn: October–November)**

- Monsoons retreat; sky becomes clear.

- High humidity → heat (October heat).

- Cyclones form in Bay of Bengal affecting eastern coast.

**5. Distribution of Rainfall in India**

- Highest rainfall: Meghalaya (Mawsynram/Cherrapunji).

- Lowest rainfall: Western Rajasthan, parts of Ladakh.

- Uneven distribution affects agriculture and water availability.

**6. Monsoon as a Unifying Bond**

- Despite diversity, monsoon binds the whole country.

- Agriculture, festivals, and lifestyle depend on monsoon.

- Monsoon arrival is eagerly awaited everywhere.

**7. Important Terms**

- *Monsoon*: Seasonal reversal of winds.

- *Western Disturbances*: Rain-bearing winds from Mediterranean.

- *ITCZ (Inter Tropical Convergence Zone)*: Low-pressure zone where trade winds meet.

- *El Niño*: Warming of Pacific Ocean affecting monsoon.

These notes cover all key points needed for CBSE Class 9 exams.
