STUDY GUIDE
MATHEMATICS 1
1. What is Data?
Data means information we collect.
Example:
• Favorite fruit of classmates
• Number of pets
• Colors they like
2. Collecting data means gathering information or finding out things to answer a
question or learn something new.
3. How Do We Collect Data?
We collect data by asking questions or observing.
Examples of questions:
• “What is your favorite fruit?”
• “How many pets do you have?”
• “What color do you like?”
After asking, we count the answers.
4. Presenting data in a table means showing the information that you collected in a
clear and organized way, using rows and columns.
A table helps you to display the data so that it’s easy to understand and compare
different pieces of information.
Key Parts of a Table:
Columns: These are the vertical sections of the table. Each column represents a type of
information, like names, categories, or quantities.
Rows: These are the horizontal sections of the table. Each row shows information about
a specific item or person.
PICTOGRAPH
A pictograph is a pictorial representation of data using pictures or symbols.
A picture or symbol represents a specific value.
This chart is an example of pictograph. Specifically, it is a horizontal pictograph.
Parts of a Pictograph
Pictograph title – tells what the pictograph is about.
Column titles – identify what each column shows.
Category labels – tell the type of data collected.
Symbol or picture – an image that represents a specific value.
Legend – tells the value of each symbol
