SPSS NOTES
(DR. UMAR)
Its better to take age not in ranges/group form in demographics , because it would be
difficult to calculate their mean later.
In order to arrange the data in ascending/ descending form of a variable , for example,
age:
Click on Data, then Sort Cases, select Age, click on Ascending/Descending
if you want to reverse above order:
Click on Data, then Sort Cases, select ID, click on Ascending/Descending
To convert Age in years to Age in Months:
Click on Transform, then Compute Variable, select Age, click on * (sign of
multiplication), click on 12 and click Arithmetic and then OK.
{write name of new label (example : age in months) in “Target Variable”
If we want to make categories/grouping of “Age”.
Click on Transform, then Recode into different Variable, select Age, write new
name/label, click on change , write old and new values. (example: write 28 in “range”,
Click on Transform, then Compute Variable, select Age, click
Write 38 in “through”, write 1in new, and then ok.
(also assign same values in variable view, so you may not forget the assigned values
later.)
