The Spanish brown bear or Cantabrian brown bear is one of the most endangered species in Spain. It lives in
the mountains of Cantabria and Asturias. In the Asturias region in Spain, there were only 80 brown bears in
2011. The Spanish brown bear is the largest animal on the Iberian Peninsula. Males can be 2 m tall. The males
are usually bigger than the females. They eat fruits and small animals. The brown bears in Spain can walk
more than 20 kilometres looking for food.
The Spanish brown bear has an enormous head and two small eyes. Its ears are small and its fur can be dark
brown, almost black, very light yellow or nearly white. Sometimes several colours are present in the same
animal. However, Cantabrian brown bears have darker legs than the European bears.
